Boom Mat Install/Review (Pics!)

Ok so this is the step one in the install log of the Boom Mat Acoustic Sound Deadening Spray. Each can covers 20sq feet so i figured 60sq feet would be a good place to start- and if i ever need more i can always run down to Summit Racing and pick up more.

This build log will be several days worth of work with updates along every step of the way

The product itself. 3 cans should cover the trunk and most of the area where the 6x9s go

mmmm empty trunk. havnt seen it in awhile

tearing up the carpet. thats the MB Quart 1000.1 Discus that powers the Fi Bl 12"

the bar of wires taped together. Any idea of what to do with this thing? its cumbersome and ugly and i wish i could just cut it out. what have you done with yours? im looking for ideas because im not sure what im going to do with it yet

The area with the wire pulled down in front. this is where the majority of the rattles i hear come from so this area will receive an extra thick coat of Boom Mat

Gah- the only thing stopping me from continuing farther today. i dont have any kind of tool to get this off. guess i should pick one up. what would i look for?

kwhauck 02-09-2010 05:49 PM

can't see it, is it a torx?

if so

AleroDrime 02-09-2010 06:09 PM

its a star nut(torx is prolly right) or what ever theyre called, their an effing pain, there one of those PITA tools you never have laying around and have to call around to borrow one, i had to drive 10 mins to my uncles to borrow one

size might be a 5.7 not shure if thats even a size but i know its write on mine

and what r u doing with the trunk light hanging out, do you not know where it goes or do u just have it out to spray around it? couldnt understand ur comment about it

Vic28 02-09-2010 06:13 PM

Its a torx like kwhauck said... I used a vise grip and no problem.

Ryan from Ohio 02-09-2010 06:36 PM

its a Torx. It is also Red Loctite'd (permanent) in.

Its a 47 Torx I believe. Same as the seat bolts.

Just go buy a 3/8" socket set of them.

And WHY did you buy spray on?

The 20 Sq ft coverage per can is at what thickness?

I used underbody spray one time. What a msitake. Asphalt, smell, yuck. Especially in the summer. Glad I only had to deal with it for one summer :)

it says it withstands heats up to 300* and i am sick of the paper towels shoved into the crevices to stop the rattle. id rather say fk it and test the spray then use the paper towels. 30 dollars for deadening works for me. not to mention ill have the alero for a few more years then on to a new car. so even if it fks up big time im not too worried about it. not to mention this isnt underbody spray. the main reason i bought it was to stop the rattling and im pretty damn sure this will do the trick

Ryan from Ohio 02-09-2010 07:44 PM

At what thickness?

This stuff works by mass-loading panels. The thicker you apply it, the better the results but less coverage you will get.

You want about 1/16" thiclk.

And you can go into a car parts store and buy a single torx socket for like $5.

jayson_waltz 02-09-2010 07:56 PM

thats a torx bolt, same as seat belt and what holds the seats in. they are actually very common, everyone that works on cars should have torx bits around. but if you don't have one that big, a metric allen wrench (forget what size) will fit in nice and snug. Thats what i used to get my seats out, and the tight ones i just smacked the wrench with a hammer to pop it loose then it worked good.

removed it to spray around it. i wish i could cut that whole bar of wires out. but i need it for the grounds for the tail lights (found that out after driving with them out haha)

no clue what thickness. havnt sprayed it yet. im not looking to completely eliminate all road noise, im just looking to stop the rattles in the area of the 6x9s and seal off the trunk the best i can. it wouldnt hurt to coat the trunk

AleroDrime 02-09-2010 10:03 PM

cherrington17 02-10-2010 08:47 AM

You mean like we all did when we say Ion's rat nest?

Me and smurf died a little inside when we saw adria's car... hence us redoing it.

MattismodderX 02-10-2010 10:33 AM

yea my car used to be a ghetto mess of wires until one day i got in one of those ima spend 8 hours and redo everything the right way moods. my brother has one of those torx bits. im gonna try and stop out there today to pick it up. if i get a chance to go in his pole barn ill snap a pic. hes got a bunch of honda bikes including the cx-650 turbo, cbr1000rr repsol, rc-30, rc-45, and rc-51 and a few more

Ryan from Ohio 02-10-2010 10:33 AM

Ok I got a response back from DEI on the "Spray on Boom Mat"

The 20 Sq ft coverage is a t 3-5 Mils thickness.

It does contain Petroleum- AKA Asphalt based.

This is nothing more than a fancy udnercoating... Rubberized Asphalt based stuff.

Furthermore the 3-5 mils thickness @ 20 sq ft aint poop.

To give you an idea, the eDead I installed in my car is 45 mils. 1 mil = .001"

Hair is about .003"-.004"

So the 20 Sq Ft coverage will be as thick as a piece of hair...

To get proper useful thickness, you need a minimum of the 45 mils the eDead is. You really want around 1/16"

I would advise NOT to use this stuff. Its a piss poor value.

You would be better off with eDead mat and usign a quart of the liquid where needed.

It will cheaper also. Since to get proper coverage of the entire trunk your going to need about another 30 cans of that stuff...

MattismodderX 02-10-2010 10:51 AM

ok i guess im not getting the point across. im more interested in stopping rattle then packing it on high to make my car death silent. so i think im going to use the 3 cans on the 6x9 area then get a gallon of edead for the trunk. and use any remaining edead for the big area below the back seats

Ryan from Ohio 02-10-2010 10:59 AM

The Liquid eDead will work for the rattles your having, brush it on. It will fill voids.

Use mat for the trunk in general.

The biggest difference in our cars is below the rear bench seat. Put two layers there, a layer up where the rear wheel well is. Do the trunk = huge difference. I did the door panels, inside of rear quarter panels also = even huger difference.

That stuff is going to do two things.

1) stink like hell for DAYS

2) make a mess

Ive been down this path man, not a pretty one. One can of that eDead stuff will give you better results, more coverage- and wont stink or be such a mess.

If you do use this let me know if Im off base with any of my comments. Im speaking from experience here. It was a horrible thing to use on the inside of my car, I only had to endure it for a month though... so I got lucky (car got totaled).
