why does a venture van 3400 have more power?

a chevy venture van puts out more hp then my engine does at the same rpms. is there a mechanical difference or its it all just computer tuning?

Redog 04-12-2011 07:08 PM

I think it's just tuning. I doubt the cam is different in the "U" bodies

Shiwnath 04-12-2011 07:15 PM

they also have a different tranny. they have the 4T65 so they could play a role in the hp difference aswell.

so i wonder if one could take the puter from the van and put it in the alero, i found this on the internetz

185 hp (138 kw) @ 5200 rpm (Venture, Montana/Aztek, Rendezvous, Silhouette)

170 hp (127 kw) @ 4700 rpm (Grand Am, Alero)

different rpms. but idk about swapping the computer... i dont think it would work really.. computer wouldn't send same warning codes i would think as the alero. maybe... idk??

Ttop191 05-16-2011 09:44 AM

^ engine signals would be the same/similar, the problems you would have would be the trans most likely

jawa 05-16-2011 11:21 AM

well the question is what makes the U bodies have more power then the alero and grand am

Ttop191 05-16-2011 11:28 AM

tuning...you already got you answer :p

jawa 05-16-2011 11:31 AM

guesse im going to hunt for a U body computer and see if it works

Ttop191 05-16-2011 11:31 AM

have fun blowing up your trans :thumb:

jawa 05-16-2011 11:36 AM

why would it blow the trans

Ttop191 05-16-2011 11:39 AM

they use different transmissions..meaning different designated shift points, different gear ratios, line pressures. think about it...you are telling your 4t45e to shift at such and such speed when the computer is thinking you have the gear ratio of a 4t65e trans...shifting at the wrong moment = catastrophic failure..

Redog 05-16-2011 12:17 PM

The computer is the same shape and has the same ports to screw the busses into, but like Ttop said the trans is going to have serious issues

The 4t65 tranny has different gear ratios than the 4t45. The van shifts at different points as well. The torque convertor has a different stall.

That's if it even works in hte first place, the VIN in the van's PCM will be different than the VIN in your Alero. They also have a differnet secruity system in terms of passlock.

But in the past, you haven't listened, so then I wish you good luck in doing it. If your really lucky, the car won't start

The power difference is mostly do to packaging of the intake and exhaust (and the tuning changes that accompany it). There's a lot more room to work with on the vans so there are fewer space constraints.

Ha. Tell that to someone who owns one.

My mom used to have a Montana with the 3400. It's far worse than the Alero.

mfuller 05-16-2011 12:39 PM

I was referring to packaging for the powertrain engineers, not how much room the average backyard mechanic has to change spark plugs.

a.graham52 05-16-2011 12:50 PM

theres no physical differnce in the engines. exhaust and intake i belive are the same.

Redog 05-16-2011 02:27 PM

IDK about the exhasut, but the intake is def shorter on the van than the n body.

The ex wife an I almost bought a Siloutte (sp) right after my son was born. We didn't buy it because the LIM was teh wrong year for the van (2003 van with a 00 mani) and a really bad RTV job. I figured it was a soccer mom's van and she cooked the engine with the LIMG leak and most likely warped the heads

When it comes down to it. You want to "swap" a 3400 for a 3400. A lot of expense that is normally incurred on upgrading the engine. Don't worry about 15 HP on the same engine. Mod yours and it will do just fine.

a.graham52 05-16-2011 03:03 PM

i didnt want to swap engines, i was hoping i could swap programing since i have access to GM SPS and hopfuly all i needed was just a venture van vin but im pretty sure if i was to reprogram i would have all kinds of security codes
