Supercharging my ion?

well i've been looking into supercharging my 03 ion QC3, its a 2.2L ecotec (automatic) will the transmission rob any power ? heard yes and no on ionforums.net might as well get some views from the alero guys n gals

nickbain 01-08-2008 09:24 PM

I would say yes but I'm no expert.

99-alero 01-08-2008 09:27 PM

hmmm well if it does im not gonna care if its 5-10hp as long as its not a total waste of cash ya kno, been looking for automatic cavs and sunfires with the eco that are supercharged and what numbers they got but no numbers :(

Vtolds 01-08-2008 09:27 PM

Yes, but you wont notice because the SC makes up for it. SC is parasitic so it takes power but then it probably makes all of the loss plus probably another 60HP since it runs on belts and not exhaust like a turbo.

thats what i've heard a few times (something along that lines) so far the supercharger idea is looking pretty good..keep in mind im not trying 2 make a rocket out of it just want more power, going from my 3.4 Ho to a 2.2 QC makes me feel like im driving a rock lol

nickbain 01-08-2008 09:32 PM

what kinda hp # would one expect from a s/c ecotec with little to no supporting mods?

Vtolds 01-08-2008 09:34 PM

depends on the system I guess, but I was just give a ball park 60hp guess just for reference.

99-alero 01-08-2008 09:36 PM

yea i was looking at the GM performance and they say 148hp to 200hp give or take so a 50-60hp boost , and 200hp in my little ion is more then enuf for me right now

jabartram 01-08-2008 11:33 PM

If i'm correct you can estimate a 24% loss of horsepower through the drive train with an automatic.

what would it be about with a stick, I'm assuming a bit less?

yoslvr442 01-11-2008 01:26 PM

10-15% give or take a couple

yes......

MADMike 01-11-2008 11:26 PM

I heard that its not so much the transmission that robs the power but the torque converter, and generaly 10 - 20%

[ion] C2 01-11-2008 11:26 PM

any way to lower the amount lost with an auto? always something i've pondered

engine mounts obviously

nickbain 01-11-2008 11:52 PM

I would assume engine and tranny mounts and a good synthitic trans oil...or a 5-speed swap :p

Invent a more efficient torque converter/clutch system to allow the drive gear to be engaged at idle when the vehicle is stopped.

If you're adding more power, there won't be a loss of anything. Maybe it won't be quite as much whp as a 5 speed car after it's all said and done, but it'll still be much better than stock. You're paying too much attention to drivetrain efficiency. That supercharger will do just fine with the auto.
