Help

so my car has had the battery light on for a while and the batteries been recently replaced. Took it to autozone and they told me i need a new alternator $140..

My service engine light recently came on so i took it to autozone. they told me my gas cap must be loose. Looked and it turns out someone stole the gas key from INSIDE my car when i left the windows down and took the gas cap. great $20...

The help i need is , is there anywhere i can get the alternator for cheaper or is that pretty much a good price to pay for it ?

Good price dont cheap out on somthing that could leave you stranded

I bought a new Alternator from Autozone for $160 and it crapped out a week later, took it back and they only had a Remaned one for $100.99, and 2 years later, that crapped out.

Bought my current one at Advance Auto Parts for $149.99 and it's still OK. That was 4 years ago.

You could find on in a junkyard, probably for $20, but why take the chance?

dont go to a junk yard. locally I got one for 50 and it crapped out in about 3 months. not worth it.

what engine ?? I got one freshly rebuilt in H.O. but it's only for a ld9
it got rebuilt, I used it 2 months and then it sitted 4 months in my garage...

edit I see that you have a LD9... what about 120 shipped, you're not that far... USPS should be reasonnable.. it costed me close to 200 to have it rebuilt...

I highly recommend one from a junkyard, Just make sure it's the original alternator.

That and these alternators are easy enough to repair:

I have a used alternator in my Alero, but the original one is in my basement with a new diode pack in it.

what brand is it? thats a good price for h.o.

k3nd4l 06-29-2012 11:56 PM

lol theres only 49k miles on the car so id HOPE the alternator wouldnt be done in the next 4 weeks.

BTW my alarm recently has decided to randomly go off at random times. And also once in a while when i unlock my car it'll make the unlock/horn sound 3x in a row.. anyone have any idea on what can be causing this !?

EDIT: as i posted this my alarm proceeded to go off

Im not to fimilar with alarms, but low power may freak it out, like its nodding off to sleep and jerks ba,k awake lol idk. I suck with electrical shit

Alerojester 06-30-2012 09:22 AM

yes with a weak battery your alarm will tend to go off like was said above by manwhore your alarm needs so much power to keep it at a constant "awake" point and with a bad alternator it can't keep the battery above where its supposed to be i went through that with my 1994 cavalier a few years ago changed the alt. and never had a problem again

cavaliers60 06-30-2012 11:00 AM

I know when my battery was dead, my LED lights would do an awesome strobe show inside the car.

the weird thing is my alarm will go off even when not set
i have to press my lock button once to lock the door and 2x to set the alarm. recently due to this problem ive just been pressing it once but still the alarm chooses to go off..

Alerojester 06-30-2012 09:17 PM

Unscrew the battery when your sleeping, then screw it in when your ready to drive.

Atleast nobody can steal your car unless they have a handy 8 mm ratchet (or whatever yours is)
