was driving back to my house and then it just started making this noise!

Rexter9x 06-01-2008 01:00 PM

Wow, that sounds... well bad. My parents looked at a malibu that made that sound. Hopefully it isnt too bad. Good luck

jackal2000 06-01-2008 01:16 PM

sounds like a rod knocking.

dtldiaspora 06-01-2008 01:52 PM

so if its a rod about how much you think im gonna be looking at to fix it?

jackal2000 06-01-2008 04:32 PM

a couple grand.

dtldiaspora 06-01-2008 04:57 PM

so my friends dad just came and looked at it and he thinks its either the rod or a valve, yah! anyways, i aint paying another 2 gs to fix it again, so me and him are gonna take it to his house and take it apart later this week and look at it, sad thing is i paid 2 gs in october to fix the same thing except then my engine had locked up to where it wouldnt start. right now it still starts

-Alero- 06-01-2008 06:04 PM

take it back to the person who originally worked on it, or just spend 1,300$ on an extended warrenty? and then pay 100$ and have the stealership do it right?

otherwise pay an arm and a weiner

negolien 06-01-2008 06:26 PM

Wtf Rod Knock Yo!

WhiteV6 06-01-2008 07:22 PM

Just get another motor and throw it in there. Cheaper. If it did this before and was fixed, it sounds like the real problem wasn't fixed (sorry, obvious). Partially plugged oil galleys, out of round journals, bad oil pump, etc.

car-part.com or ebay. under 1000 easily if you can do the labor yourself.

Redog 06-01-2008 10:37 PM

Yeah it's def a rod. you didn't help it too much by revving it, but the motor is shit now anyway.

No dealership is going to give you anything for that car, swap the motor. save yourself a ton of cash

Uh,

Dunno, my cousins Grand Am had that and his dad fixed it. 2 years ago.

mfuller 06-03-2008 09:36 PM

Step 1: pull the valve covers and look for loose rocker arms and/or a broken valve spring.

Nate's Alero 06-03-2008 09:39 PM

Did u overheat it?

dtldiaspora 06-03-2008 11:37 PM

Gotta love the quad 4, I have owned two and both of them had engine problems with under 100K on the clock.

The worst was a 97 cavalier that threw a rod through the block, which in turn started a fire under the hood. The other is in a 99 grand am that is sitting in my garage with metal flakes in the oil.

Vinalero 06-04-2008 12:13 AM

If this is in the right category, this is a 3.4 liter lol

dtldiaspora 06-04-2008 06:35 PM

lol ya i didnt wanna say anything i was just gonna let him be:rolleyes2:

tejohnson 06-04-2008 07:23 PM

You spun a bearing dude. Sounds like it may also have bent the crank, or the bearing is really trashed, with that loud of a knock... Drain the oil, look for copper flakes. Remove the oil filter, cut it open, and if it contains the following, then it is a spun bearing:
