On my old quad four alero, It governed at 107mph. You could get rid of that with an ASE chip but i never had the money or the three days without a car.

I was wondering if anyone with an ecotec knows what they top out at. Hopefully they wont top out at 107mph cause i know our cars are more capable

Any answers will be greatly appreciated
thanx

If i'm not mistaken they all will do 108, I have the 3400 and that is all she used to do, now i'm not sure? had her up to 127 on the dyno then she shifted into 4th

Redog 07-09-2004 09:34 AM

Most GM cars hit the governer at 108

My buddy had a GAGT and put in the PCM from PFYC and he said he got it up to 153mph. Don't know if I belive him since he said he hit that on the Turnpike. He had the 3400.

FormulaNERD 07-09-2004 09:53 AM

i believe it... the GAGT has a different gear ratio in the tranny. i may be wrong but it should give it a higher top speed than the alero.

i've heard of aleros with ase doin 148....

and yes, pretty much all newer gm's are governed at 108

Oldsman 07-09-2004 10:34 AM

actually with gear ratios the Alero would have a higher top speed than a GA.

the GAGT has a 3.29 final drive and the Alero's have 3.09 or 8. so the alero has a taller gear and this turns into a little slower off the line but higher top speed.

FormulaNERD 07-09-2004 12:48 PM

cool, i dont know anything about gear ratios, but i knew that they were 3.29 and 3.09.... i plan on swapping to the GAGT tranny soon, if indeed i find out that mines shot.

Redog 07-09-2004 05:26 PM

/\/\/\/\ If you do that you'll have to change the PCM too.

Since the trannies are different, the PCM is programed different too. Do some research, but you should be able to pick up the PCM on PFYC for the GAGT

The alero 3400 wouldn't have a higher top speed than the GA 3400, because the car is drag-limited; IE it doesnt have enough horsepower to redline 4th gear. If it did have enough horsepower, yes, it's top speed would be higher, but thanks to the grand am's shorter differential, that should put the engine closer to it's peak horsepower in 4th gear and thus give it a higher top speed. This is all of course with the limiter removed..

Voodosoup 07-10-2004 12:00 AM

I believe mfuller or someone else here hit the aerodynamic brick wall in the mid 130's

should be abou tthe same for the GA 3400.

MikeSS 07-10-2004 11:44 AM

The Gearing in my GETRAG 5-Speed would limit my top speed if I took of the limiter. I am at 3000RPM in 5th Gear at 75MPH already

overdrive75 07-10-2004 11:52 AM

Actually guys the 3400, alero is a 3.05 final drive the ones mentioned don't exist.

The ECO's top out at 107, however, with the speed limiter raise only have the power to get up to like 119.

5spdAlero 07-11-2004 01:47 AM

on my quad four w/ getrag i hit teh speed governor in 4th gear at about 6000

I dont know if this mod works on newer vehicles, but on my 88 Z24 the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) had 2 wires coming from it, these two wires went to the ECM and reported vehicle speed. What we did was tap into and put a toggle switch on one of the wires and ran the swith into the car. When the car reached aprox 110 mph(limited at 113mph) I would flip the switch cutting the signal from the VSS to the ECM, and there would be no speed limiter. The only catch to this was that there is no speedometer after the swith had been turned off. With the nos I had it was esseintial to find a mod like this because a chip advanced the timing and thats a big 'no no' with nos. It worked great, maybe someone who has some schematics could research this better than I can to see if it will work with our cars...

Redog 07-11-2004 09:30 PM

I've heard you can do this with the Alero but the problem is that you will be breaking about 5 government standards

brsexton 07-11-2004 09:40 PM

My question is, who would really want to be in an Alero going faster then 107mph? Or any "normal" car as far as that goes. Sure not me. I don't trust it. I would be afraid that parts would start coming off. And ALL of you know how our brakes suck. You would never get stopped fast enough if you had to.

overdrive75 07-12-2004 07:17 AM

This mod doesn't work, vehicle speed if the VSS fails, vehicle speed can be calculated from the transmission input speed sensor, as it knows what gear the transmission is in. Also if you have an ABS equiped car, you have 4 other speed sensors, feeding info into the BCM as well.

Crolero 07-12-2004 09:24 AM

On the highways here in croatia there are no speed limits. When i go to work ill be driving around 80-90mph and have VW and BMWs driving 120-140mph. I dont think that any1 should be alowed to go faster than 100mph. Ive seen 2 many high speed wrecks. Wish european car manufactures would regulate top speeds like the US dose. It would make me feal a hell of a lot better on the roads.

bigd6983 07-12-2004 12:46 PM

dang 120-140.......i wanna go there......that would be fun...

havik 07-12-2004 01:22 PM

The gear ratios I have for the Alero are, for the auto:
1st: 2.96; 2nd: 1.62; 3rd: 1.00; 4th: 0.68; Reverse: 2.14; Final: 2.2L is 3.91, 3.4L is 3.05

For the manual:
1st: 3.58; 2nd: 2.02; 3rd: 1.35; 4th: 0.98; 5th: 0.69; Reverse: 3.31; Final: 3.94;

FutureEcotecOwnerAgain 08-19-2004 10:30 PM

my 03 alero gl tops out at 109 and my brothers 00 grand am gt tops out at 127.
