Coolant low? Thermostat bad?

jawa 07-05-2010 10:34 AM

coolant is good

thermostat was replaced 2 months ago

worknprog.99 07-05-2010 11:29 AM

well you most likely didnt bleed or "burp" the cooling system after you changed the thermastat it sounds like.

jawa 07-05-2010 11:58 AM

oh it was running at normal temp after i did the thermo. and i bled the piss out of it last week for 20 mins

lord2heart 07-05-2010 02:29 PM

you can try putting more water and less coolent and/or buy some watter wetter from advanced

jawa 07-05-2010 02:45 PM

ita pretty much all water

lord2heart 07-05-2010 02:54 PM

since you live in a hot tropical place it could be just normal but you could just buy a bigger rad

edit when does it get hot? in traffic? or just cruzin?

jawa 07-05-2010 03:23 PM

ok ive had the car here for 3 months and this past week is when it started doing this

where can i get a bigger rad

it gets hot cruzn and in traffic
i can be goin 75 and that pig is dam near 3/4

Chris2000 07-05-2010 03:30 PM

My car does this too, also been wondering about it.

I completely flushed and changed the coolant and T-stat about a month ago. When I sit on a hill or stopped in traffic it slowly goes up, but when I start driving it goes back to 1/2. Also, you can smell the cars oil when its hot, but it isn't leaking or anything.. Bad seal on the cap letting fumes out possibly for that I'm guessing.

jawa 07-05-2010 04:16 PM

mine dont return to half at all unless its turned off

lord2heart 07-05-2010 08:44 PM

when was last time cooling system been serived? i'm pretty sure its the coolent

edit. prettry sure you can buy the rad anywhere, internet, local car parts or whatever. just make sure you measure if you decide to buy a bigger rad.

jawa 07-06-2010 03:42 AM

coolant is pretty much just water

do i gotta run the dex garbage?

im thinkn of upgrading the rad and fans

widbyj 07-06-2010 04:06 AM

These cars run too hot for plain water. Flush it well and fill with a good mix.

lonnie 07-06-2010 12:25 PM

Since I've had my car it has always run at 3/4 sitting still...this is of course dependent on the weather. In summer months she gets up there in winter it never move past half temp. I'm by no means a car person but are the fans turning on when they are suppose to? If the thermostat is good, and the coolant is good, and there are no leaks so the level is good...what else can it be? Could there be a pump problem I wonder. Maybe one of these engine gurus will be kind enough to help you out.

jawa 07-06-2010 06:06 PM

yea my fans are comming on im leaning tward a partially cloged rad .

Since it's all water you should have no qualms about pullin off the radiator hoses and using a hose to blast some high pressure water through the radiator... get a decent nozzle that'll seal pretty well, I use this:

makes a good seal so you can really blast it out.

Then you need a good 50/50 (or preferrably 60coolant/40water) mix.

Running straight water is a terrible idea... You could be boiling the whole system, and if you're unlucky you've already destroyed something!!!

water boils at 220*. The radiator cap raises the boiling point by 3xRatePSI (aka 45*). Thus your coolant WILL boil at 265*, and with your car running at 3/4 that's getting dangerously close.

The proper mix of coolant not only freezes at a lower temp than water, but also boils at a higher temp, protecting your engine from boiling and destroying gaskets!!!!!!

What happens if you overflow your radiator reservoir a little bit?
