Ok so I have paid for the following parts, I will be picking them up on Friday.
axels, console, shifter, pedals, shift cables, clutch master cylinder It took me forever to find a yard that had these parts, I guess 5 speed grand am's/ Alero's are extremely hard to come by? |
yes they are!!!...you will have to take alot of pics, and write down alot of info, since there will be peeps knocking down the door to get this done
|
I'm currently doing this as well. I do have a second car to drive in the time that it's down. Just trying to locate all the parts right now. me and a friend are going to be working on it. He's a GM small car guru, and his brother will be welding in the mounts.
|
hopefully someone will actually do this swap that can help others who want to do this...who knows...i may try thi next year
|
Well if you need some help I'm available , I did it to my '99 Alero.
|
I'm using the Getrag Hm 282 out of a 92 beretta

What transmission are you using where you have to weld in mounts? |
Man i cant believe this is still a sticky! i was pretty dang sarcastic two and a half years ago.
ill update it with a valid link, because i think it used to be a link to the search engine...hehe |
I know, old post, but I have a question. What about the getrag trannys that were on the early 90's V6 cavaliers? Would they bolt up to our 3400's? I think that was before GM started making all their engines in a "family" format, to be swapp-able with multiple trannys and whatnot.
|
as long as you get the v6 bell housing it will bolt right up to the motor......
|
To generalize, basically the same bellhousing pattern was used on most FWD engines aside from the SOHC/DOHC 4-cylinders.
|
thanks cliff, and do you have a list of getrag 282 vehicles years and motors mated too......or you could probably just quote them off the top of your head.......
|
Basically anything FWD from 87-94 that has a V6, Quad4 (maybe only HO or better), or Turbo 2.0. However, the V6 ones are the ones that will bolt up to a 3400. The others do have some advantages if you want parts for more aggressive gears though. Somewhere during 1991 (limited production) and for 1992+, all the HO Quads had the 3.94 ratio. Some people want this, but for a 3400 unless you have some crazy tires you're just going to go up in smoke all the time. I can already break traction on GoodYear Eagle F1s from a roll with my basically stock 3400.
The 3.4 DOHC cars have a Getrag 284 which is a bit beefed up. But it's harder to service and uses a more expensive pull-type clutch. |

sounds like one of those easier said than done deals.. lol |

Not really. Finding a manual trans to bolt up to the 3400 is easy as pie! |

Lmao Cliff, circumstance quote lol |
*bump*
Anyone made any progress on this project? Looks like some guys had this in the works, or at least wanted to. Would be nice to see it done and working.

I forgot all about this thread, however I sold off the 5 speed parts and picked up the 4T65e-HD trans, axles, wiring harness, side mount and PCM code from the GXP Concept Car. I should be working on it sometime this summer as the parts are sitting in my garage along with a second 2000 GAGT. I just need to fab up the front and rear mount as they were already gone :) |
did anything ever come of this

yes and no, mine is almost done, but it got put on the back burner and has been almost done for over a year........so who knows........hopefully before spring. I'm trying to get everything done so that in december I can take the alero to denver to get the new headers reworked.... |
