okay, okay. I was a major postponer and waited till the last minute to get my oil changed. (that being when the light came on) Now i have successfully changed the oil, but the change oil light is still on. I know that i can go in and reset it, but will i have to do that everytime a light comes on, even after i've fixed the problem??

turn your ignition to the "ON" position, but do not start. Mash down on your gas pedal 3 times and she should turn off.
My light is goofy, I won't see it for 20,000 miles and I change my oil regularly and then all of a sudden i'm at 3100 miles and it will come on...who knows?

Not sure if mashing the gash turning it off is a fluke or not; but here's the owners manual version.

Open your door and leave it open. (drivers) on the left part of the dash, there's a fuse panel. Stick your finger in and pop it off. Turn your ignition on without starting your car. Wait for everything to stop blinking. push your reset button till change oil or tire pressure light starts blinking.

If you have tpms, ignore the tpms light blinking. push the button again.
Now your change oil light should be blinking. Push reset and hold for roughly 10 seconds (1 apple 2 apple, it's not that quick) It should turn off.

If you just want to reset the tpms, just gold the button down when it's blinking.

Actually Gre the newer cars don't have the reset button anymore. I already researched it...the spot is there for it and its on the fuse box identification page, but the button just isn't there...

The mashing of the gas pedal is the way to go...this is the way it is done in the newer cars w/out the button and also on the intrigue, aurura, cadys, etc...

Mines the 03. unless they got rid of it on the 04, it should be there.

I've seen it on a 99 and an 02 also.

I'm just a tire tech at my shop. but whenever someone (mechanic, customor, or another tech) has a problem with a tpms or oil reset, they just ask me because I have an alero. I know they got rid of tpms somwhere between 99 and 03.

Are you talking about the left fuse box panel? What year is your alero?


Just curious because I haven't seen one without a switch; and I've worked on quite a few aleros

mine is a 2004 and it has no button in the fuse box, but it shows it on the diagram on the fuse panel. I worked at an Olds dealer in the service department for 6 years, so I got some know-how on these things. I also stopped in and asked how to turn my light off after I discovered there was no button in the fuse box anymore. The tech said that the button was a blessing, but they didn't put it on all the olds' and the ones they didn't had to press the gas pedal.
My old alero was a 2000 and it had a button which is what threw me off on the new one when i went to turn the light off.

alright, the pics are kinda bad, but I just went out and took some pics and its pitch black outside so the flash kinda got in the way and I wasn't able to open my door the whole way let alone see where on earth I was taking these pics...
but one of the 3 is my fuse panel showing the button that should be there and the other 2 are the fuse box itself missing a button.

No kiddin. SO gas eh?

there are still plenty new ones out there...you just REALLY have to look for one and even in that, you're going to have to take a nice little flight or drive to pick it up.

I have an 04 as well and I have to do the gas thing. In fact I think I read it in the manual. Yep Idid. Here's how it reads in my manual:

1. Turn the ignitio to ON, with the engine off.

2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal slowly 3 times within 5 seconds. The reset is complete when you hear the chimes and the CHANGE OIL light goes out. However if the light stays on and no chime is heard you will need to repeat the reset procedure.

my gauges & lights dont come on until the car runs for 30 seconds, and i cant reset the light...i tried disconecting the battery for over 20 mins, and its still there...anything i can do or just live with it?

alright, well i'll definitely have to try that whole gas thing. But i'll let yall know whats up after that.......hopefully it works, cuz that damn light is annoying! Thanks ;)

okay i tried the whole gas thing and that didnt work. My car is an 01, should it have the button in the fuse box? I think i tried looking for it before and could never find it. If i dont have the button does anybody have anymore suggestions?

your oil change light will come on early or late depends on your driving conditions, the car knows when its time its just up to you to change it.

you should have the reset button....
