Its not going to happen, but if your intrested, check this link

http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showt...ght=speed+swap

because yes, it has been asked 238947230 times, and yes it will cost more than 4x what your car is worth, which is why no private party has done it

can we make this a sticky?

Youngblood77 05-14-2005 11:24 AM

stuck.

Redog 05-14-2005 03:58 PM

Wrong link?

Oldsmopimp 05-14-2005 04:07 PM

Its been done on a GA bro.

Youngblood77 05-14-2005 04:19 PM

Yeah, it's been done, but holy hell was it expensive..not to mention, last time I heard it STILL wasn't correct. Needed tweeking of sorts? I dunno, but I think Mike's point is that the swap isn't something that can be done as easily as people would think.

I can't wait to see when John's ride gets done.....that car's gonna rock. :thumb:

**Link's been fixed.

I would estimate that you could possibly get a 5-speed swap in a 3400 for under $1000 if you were doing most of the work yourself and got the parts used. It's really the swap for someone with a garage and an extra car. Unfortunately that isn't most people here.

jturkey69 07-15-2006 11:44 PM

that link is dead now...

Six Shooter 07-16-2006 11:47 PM

Yeah I'd like to see what was in that link, if it all possible.

TIA

Cliff8928 09-16-2006 03:36 AM

I just happened to be tinkering under the hood of my Alero today, and noticed that ALL of the transmission mounts are attached to the engine cradle. That will make a manual swap that much easier for the 3400 if the cradles are different. It's sure a lot easier to swap a cradle than weld in new hard mounts to the frame structure.

jturkey69 09-16-2006 08:58 AM

and now with powertuners, it should make things a little easier i assume?

burg03 09-16-2006 10:14 AM

sounds like a plan

Cliff8928 09-17-2006 03:40 AM

Yes, with a the DHP you should be able to select an option for Manual transmission.

BlackJack 09-17-2006 03:52 AM

as of current release, there is no selectable option for "manual transmission" with DHP, however certain program options can be tweaked to ignore inputs that would normally be associated with automatics, such as torque management, and fuel/timing adjustments based on gear, torque abuse, TCC lock/unlock, etc.

burg03 09-18-2006 11:17 AM

I will be glad when some one come up with a kit for it

I must've been confusing that with TunerCat which has a M/T check-box (at least on chevy trucks)

sushko 09-28-2006 03:21 PM

so is there any way this can happen because i my freind has a 5 speed that came out of a 3.4L grand-am 2000.
Plus my dads friend can do it if it can be done.

alerored04 09-28-2006 03:45 PM

there was never a 5 speed in a 3400 car, that is the point of the swap. Maybe it is a manual out a 4 banger ga but not the v6. Plus it takes a lot more than knowing a guy that knows about cars, there is a lot of computer stuff that would need to be figured out, that is the major restriction here.

01GrandAm 09-28-2006 04:03 PM

I am going to be attempting the swap in approx a year, but I am slowly gathering info and should have parts by the end of October.

From what I have see is that you need the pedals, shifter, console, shift cables, axels, clutch master cylinder, ect. from a 5 speed 2.4L. Then you must use a 2.2L non ecotec tranny from a cavalier (preferably 2000 + as they are a getrag tranny) the 2.2L ecotec and 2.4L trannys have a different bellhousing/casing so they will not bolt up to the 3400 engine.

s far as the PCM goes, you can disable the following DTC parameters with the Powr Tuner:

• P0704 - Clutch Switch Input Circuit Malfunction
• P0705 - Trans Range Switch Circuit
• P0706 - Trans Range Switch Performance
• P0711 - TFT Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
• P0712 - Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor Circuit Low Input
• P0713 - Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor Circuit High Input
• P0716 - Input Speed Sensor Circuit Intermittent
• P0717 - Input Speed Sensor Circuit Low Input
• P0719 - Brake Switch Circuit Low Input
• P0724 - Brake Switch Circuit High Input
• P0730 - Incorrect Gear Ratio
• P0740 - TCC Enable Solenoid Circuit Electrical
• P0741 - TCC System Stuck Off
• P0742 - TCC System Stuck On
• P0748 - Pressure Control Solenoid Circuit Electrical
• P0751 - 1-2 Shift Solenoid Valve Performance - No First or Fourth Gear
• P0752 - 1-2 Shift Solenoid Valve Performance - No Second or Third Gear
• P0753 - 1-2 Shift Solenoid Circuit Electrical
• P0756 - 2-3 Shift Solenoid Valve Performance - No First or Second Gear
• P0757 - 2-3 Shift Solenoid Valve Performance - No Third or Fourth Gear
• P0758 - 2-3 Shift Solenoid Circuit Electrical
• P0785 - 3-2 Shift Solenoid Circuit Electrical
• P1527 - Transmission Range to Pressure Switch Correlation

Probably not everything that will need to be addressed, however it is a good start.

As for costing more than the car is worth, If you can get junk yard parts,I predict the total swap costing less than a rebuilt auto tranny or about $1500.

Will it be a easy straight forward swap.....No not at all. The subframe will have to be modded to either fit the tranny (if you use the 3400 subframe) or the engine (if you use the 5 speed subframe) The wiring is going to be a challenge for some along with the PCM programming.

Cliff8928 09-29-2006 03:40 AM

What is different on the subframe for the engine? the torque-strut location?

Not sure yet, something that I am looking into.
