Transmission Help

Doing a fluid and filter change, how much if i just drain the pan, how much fluid will i need to refill back to spec? i hear between 9 and 12 and was unsure, the tranny acts up when its really hot out and i have been at high speeds for a while, other than that its fine, its that 2nd gear "jump" that some other people have, and i seem to have it also... it never does it when its cool out or the car is been driving around in city traffic, only on HOT days coming off the highway, if i shut off and restart it also goes away... makes no sense huh?

I honestly don't know. I know my trans took 7 quarts like the Haynes manual said but they are also know to be incorrect at times so far it shifts good and there is no leaks.

Buy 2 gallons and you'll be safe. I've done mine 3 times but never measured exactly how much it is, all I can tell you is that its every bit of 7 quarts but less than 8.

Nate's Alero 05-28-2009 03:26 PM

i dont want to do it, but i know it has never been done and with 150K miles on the clock i fear for it

AbHeLlRaZoR 05-28-2009 03:27 PM

it's so easy to do.

CactusWill 05-28-2009 03:27 PM

Well its in the manual to do it at 150k, better safe than sorry.

bdyman 05-28-2009 03:31 PM

ok but if you never changed the fluid, i wouldnt do it now ya might "shock" the trans, i have seen that happen before where some people never change the trans fluid and then it gets done, and then the problems begin

it could be 2nd is slowly going, any shutter at different speeds, check engine light on i would be leary about changing the fluid now

Nate's Alero 05-28-2009 03:54 PM

naah, its just when its HOT out it like "jumps" no lights, no shudder, its great in 2nd, it just jumps going INTO second... idk i might put high mileage into it

the only thing im concerned about is getting the level right, where is that little plug located?

cherrington17 05-28-2009 03:55 PM

i didn't think draining was a problem. I thought flushing was a bad choice for a high mileage tranny?

idk, i dont want to flush, just really change the filter, and the fear of getting the level/filling wrong

AbHeLlRaZoR 05-28-2009 04:01 PM

well for the little plug your going to need to have the car up on a lift or over a pit, as for it's location I'm not too sure.

You are correct sir. Bdyman is referring to the damage that can be caused by a flush. Only changing the filter and replacing the lost fluid is always a good thing.

colonel6632 05-28-2009 04:20 PM

does the manual transmission also take 7 quarts?

CactusWill 05-28-2009 04:27 PM

No. Probably 4 or so, but I don't know for sure.

colonel6632 05-28-2009 04:30 PM

can i just fill it up till it no longer holds any?

cherrington17 05-28-2009 04:40 PM

no. there is a weep hole on the side, that you need to pull the plug on. when it drips out, your good. if it gushes out, you have too much.

Nate's Alero 05-28-2009 04:42 PM

where is the 4T45E weep hole?

CactusWill 05-28-2009 04:45 PM

Theres an 11mm plug on the passenger side behind and above the cv joint outlet.

OH so its easy and i dont need it on a jack? ill do this today then :0

EDIT, i know i need it on a jack, but i dont really need to get under the car to check the level

CactusWill 05-28-2009 04:54 PM

Well, you have to see that there is at least a drip to know that it is full and replace the plug.
