Hesitation at full throttle
I searched the forum, and my exact question didn't come up.
I know about the fuel shutoff, but my car rarely goes above 4500 rpms. When I put it to the floor (or close), it hesitates and stumbles. It does this hot or cold, and does it at takeoff or highway speeds. The kickdown works ok, but it still stumbles if I floor it. Is this a typical throttle stumble on the LA1 or is it a problem? I'm not concerned about it doing something similar in P or N, as I don't rev it too high when I'm not moving. |
Its an issue. My car does 6k fine.
In park or N When not moving. It has a rev limit of 4000 rpm or 4500 I cant remember but its one of those two. As for the problem. Im stumped too. And lights on? |
The ses light is on, code p0401 (egr flow insf). The tube isn't blocked, but has a leak. What I meant by 4500rpm is gradual acceleration. On takeoff, I rev up and usually get to around 3500rpm or so, but sometimes I go as high as 4500rpm.
Only when I floor it, will it hesitate. |
Try and fix whats wrong with the car first. Then go from there.
|
Would a leaking egr pipe cause that kind of hesitation?
|
Maybe. Im not sure though I deleted mine before it became a problem lol but it could.
Did is show this hesitation before the light came on or after? |
ICM.
Dealt with the same problem for years and then I finally fixed it. Get a good ICM, not a cheap one. I had a cheap one and it was the problem all along. I have an OEM in there now. You know it's a good one if you look at the bottom and see 3 wrinkel spots. That's the place where it's soldered. Cheaper ones don't have these wrinkels. If you buy from Rock Auto.com, link off our front page. |
I found one on rockauto for $64.79, Airtex/Wells. I looked at the images and this one has 3 wrinkle spots that the cheaper ones didn't have, or at least that I couldn't see.
|
The only two I see with the "wrinkles" are the Airtex/Wells 2C1 and Standard LX346
I would buy one of those two, but I would probably buy the Standard LX346 only because the pic of the wrinkes is very clear. That's where the connection is soldered on. This is the video I watched. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8Z4iv7-Ke8 And this was my video, It got this bad, after replacing the ICM, I could floor it and smoke up the tires with no problems http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHOZsMIoX5g |
I was considering getting the Standard LX346, partially because of the larger solder spots, but also because of the 5yr/50k warranty. The A/W 2C1 has smaller spots, and only has a 12mo/12k warranty, but is half the price. I may just get the cheaper one now, then on tax time, I may just get the AC Delco.
Thanks for the info. I thought it may have been the idle or maybe the trans making it do that, but this is a cheap, easy fix that I can do in about a half hour or so. |
That's what I was thinking too.
Took me about 30 minutes including getting my tools out and removing the tower brace bar. If I rushed the job, would have taken me about 15 miutes |
I actually found the Standard Motors LX346 ICM on ebay for $40+ free ship. I may just do that. I checked the image and it had the clearly visible wrinkle spots like the one on rockauto.

New ICM has been ordered, should be here by tuesday.
|
Well, they sent me the wrong ICM. The one they have listed is the SMP LX346, but what they sent me was not it. The one they sent me didn't hae the wrinkle spots on the bottom of the module. I even called SMP, and they confirmed that the LX346 has 3 box shaped spots on the bottom.
Whatever you do, don't buy from Global Automotive Miami. |
It will work, just not as long as the better ones ;)
|
thx about the info on the ICM.
have a friend here that has this hesistation and stumbling at WOT. Any idea how to test the ICM if wiggling the spark plug wires does nothing? |
So, for laughs I tried installing the ICM I got from them, and it made my car run either like two cylinders weren't firing, or they were firing in the wrong order. I marked where all the wires went to before taking the old one off, and double checked the service book for correct placement (even though the wires were marked) and it still did it. Put the old one back on, and now it seems like it runs better than before I tried the new one.
