Brake light randomly on??

So a few weeks ago I slid in a ditch. No major damage (that I know of) but a bent up brake line. The brake light was on after the accident. That was fixed and is leak free. Me and my dad bled the brakes properly. and the light went off about 3 days later. However it came back on about 4 or 5 days ago and has stayed on. What could cause this? The fluid level is fine, its actually over filled by just a hair to be safe. There is no air in the lines. The brakes feel excellent just like they always have. Could it be that the fluid level sensor went bad randomly? Or is it something else?

Check the switch behind your break pedal.

What switch?

the one for the e-brake, not your brake pedal

if the e-brake is engaged it lights up on the dash BRAKE

[ion] C2 07-24-2011 07:35 PM

possibly, hasn't occurred during my extensive usage of the e-brake while moving in the snow lol

a.graham52 07-24-2011 07:39 PM

both of my aleros did it. but they were both 99s too

weird you mention this topic cuz the day before i changed out my carpet i was on my way to pick my son up from camp and my brake light came on. not sure why tho, fluid and pads are all fine

If its the fluid level sensor, could I short the two wires together on the sensor and possibly trick it in to thinking that it is working correctly if thats whats wrong?

I will also check the ebrake switch. I drive around with the ebrake up one click all the time so maybe that has gone bad or something.

Greencoupe2.2 07-25-2011 12:30 AM

why would you do that if you actually loose brake fluid your effed, I would only do that to test it

JLw7123 07-25-2011 12:44 AM

I would check the resistence, amps and volts of the sensor if you have a dvm you never want to short anything.

yeah you could unplug that sensor and put a paperclip across the terminals and see if the light goes out.

Thats what I meant. lol. I'll try that. I dont think its the ebrake switch, cause at night when i let it down the lights still come on automatically.

try the fluid sensor first and if you cant get the light to go out that way then try the same thing with the ebrake switch. but i think you will probably find its the fluid switch.

Gr1m 07-26-2011 03:08 AM

pretty sure that means that theres air in the lines somewhere

foxsdaddy67 07-27-2011 07:04 AM

i bled mine last night and my brake light went out. bought a pair of those one man bleeder fittings for the caliper. i know what im buying whenever i change out a caliper next time. those things made it easy as hell to bleed it;)

if it was the ebrake switch, it would start to chime after moving at 5mph.
