Alero Shift Knob Removal

Is the stock shift knob hard to take off. I want to replace the stock one with an aftermarket shift knob. I looked at it and I did not see any screw holes. I have an 02 GLS coupe.

Thanks a lot guys:)

its easy, theres a little clip in the back that looks like a staple, just take a flat head and pry it out and lift the knob, its really easy. if your not gonna keep your stock shifter, ill buy it off of you

Thanks man. I will let you know. If I dont keep the stock one it's yours. Also, The stock knob as the button on the left side you have to push to engage the shifter. The aftermarket knob I want to replace does not have it? Will it still work with the aftermarket knob?

You will have to rig it up to work, but it will. Are you lookin at a manual knob?

redrider07 01-12-2008 07:15 PM

I suppose it is a manual knob. It is just a chrome knob with no buttons on it. It claims it will fit an Alero or Achieva. It's just a basic chrome shapped knob if that helps?

All you will need to do is push down on the aftermarket shifter, that's all the button does is apply force downward. My friend has one rigged up on his malibu and it tricks everyone who drives his car.

yeah, when I bought my car, it had one

they just don't have the button

so to get it out of park you hafta push down on it (that becomes your button)

it's pretty annoying and I wouldn't do it if I was you

AtomicX 01-12-2008 11:44 PM

How does it stay in place? Don't like manuals screw on or something?

CBLOHM3400 01-19-2008 09:05 AM

the one that i have has a bushing that has set screws three i think that you tighten down with a collar that goes over the shift knob before the bushing after you nstall the bushing ths shifter knob has alignment grooves in the base side the knob over the bushing and then screw the collar onto the shifter knob. ansd also with this shifter you have to push down to get from park to revese

The button broke on my car, So i'm using a Nokya Billet Aluminum Shifter with the knob. It's amazing, But once you set it up, You need to mark it and Use some Lock-Tite on the Screws to keep it in place.

I don't think a manual knob is going to work, because when you try to remove your key, your ignition won't turn off completely because of the Shifter not being set up correctly.

If i were you, I'd go with an Automatic Shift knob, but To each his own.

??? All the shifter does is apply a downard force when you press the button in. So with no button to push in, you have to manually push down. Shifter shouldn't have anything to do with key coming out so long as it is in park.

Is this the clip you guys were talking about? Cause there's no clip at my shift knob so I guess someone removed it and glued back the shift knob. So I found this one underneath. Is this the one or am I completely retarded? :)

Naich 08-20-2008 09:53 AM

no, the clip you remove is just pretty much a staple.

hum, ok. Am I missing this staple? cause all I can find in there is soft plastic, trying to pull something out of there only gets me plastic scrapes

[ion] C2 08-20-2008 10:50 AM

then it might not be there, so try pulling the knob off lol

also, your shifter/console arrangement looks really weird
