So how many cubic inches is our engine??

is it 205 or 207?

overdrive75 11-27-2003 10:39 AM

You know the bore and stroke so find the area of the bore multiply by stroke then multiply by 6 cylinders and that is the displacement.

Purple&Black 11-27-2003 10:53 AM

It's not even that hard. We already know the displacement is 3400 cubic centimeters.

1 in = 2.54 cm

cube both sides: 1 cubic inch = 16.387 cc

Code:

3400 cc
--------------- = cubic in
16.387 cc

207.5 cubic inches

BTW, 2.2L is 134 cubic inches and 2.4L is 146 cubic inches.

If anyone wants to find out how many cubic light years are in a can of pop or something like that, I can do that too... B)

overdrive75 11-27-2003 11:06 AM

The 3400 hundred is usually a rounded number, but that way works to.

Purple&Black 11-27-2003 11:37 AM

Touche...from one of GM's pages:

GM Page about the 3400

They list the displacement as 3350cc. That only calculates out to 204.43 cubic inches. So 205 still seems high, but is much better than the 207.

They also list bore and stroke as 92x84mm, so the volume of the cylinder would be:

pi * bore radius^2 * stroke = 3.14 * 46^2 * 84 * 6 cylinders = 3350395 cubic mm

So there's the proof for the 3350cc.

Bore and stroke in inches is 3.622 x 3.307

Displacement that way calculates out to 34.07 per cylinder, 204.44 total.

So really, it's not quite 205, but it would depend on how accurate 99Alero needs it.

And FYI, a can of pop is .000000000000000375 cubic light years. I just couldn't help myself. :P

crazykid 11-27-2003 12:37 PM

wow, now that i know a can of pop's cubic light years, i have no reason to live.......................... *caugh*

nice calculations though

jackal2000 11-27-2003 03:01 PM

i was wondering that too. nice work on the math.

99ALERO 11-27-2003 06:55 PM

so 205 is a better one? Cause i got mixed up cause i thought it was 205 but Autozone has it listed as 207. I think ill go with 205

Final-Reality 11-27-2003 09:46 PM

Bore = 92.00mm
Stroke = 84.00mm
Displacement = 3350cc or 3.35L or 204.4cid

PS: Chevy's famous "350" small block V8 is really a "346"

Yeah, I'd say 205. 207 would be 3392cc. Seems like they took the 3.4L and did the conversion (like I did the first time). But I'd go with 205 cuz all the info on that GM site calculates out to 204.4 cubic inches.

Redog 12-06-2003 10:39 PM

There are 60 cubic inches in 1 liter.

60 x 3.4= 204

204 divided by 60= 3.4

Yes, but as we already went over...

The actual displacement is 3.350L, not 3.4L.

BTW, there are 61 cubic inches in 1 liter.

boarder211 12-07-2003 02:27 AM

Sorry... I think that the pop can is great. You can make it look even better by saying it's 3.75 x 10 ^ -16 cubic light years! It's easier to remember that way... that is if you really want people to look at you funny. :)

What can I say! Odd facts are great!

boarder211 12-07-2003 02:46 AM

You know... looking at it like that... I think you've made an error in your calculation.... a light year is 9.227 x 10 ^ 15 m. Cubed = 7.856 x 10 ^ 47 m^3. One pop can = 335 cm ^ 3 (based on 1 ml = 1 cm^3), which is equal to 0.000335 m^3. Thus, taking

3.35 x 10 ^ -4 m^3
7.86 x 10 ^ 47 m^3/ly^3

= 4.26 x 10 ^ -52 cubic lightyears in a can of pop

Sorry... the scientist in me couldn't help it...

Final-Reality 12-07-2003 12:32 PM

Thats ok, similiar to what most scientists have to say, nobody cares

boarder211 12-07-2003 01:15 PM

Oh yeah? Well... :P Thpppppppppppppppppt!

How many cubic parsecs of slobber come with that?

boarder211 12-07-2003 06:39 PM

LOL! :) :D :D

EatonBlower 12-16-2003 02:52 PM

61 Cubic Inches per liter of displacement. 61 * 3.4 = 207.4, GM lists it as a 207, as is the 3.8 = 231 and the 3.1 = 189.
You have a 207 Big Block :D

Final-Reality 12-16-2003 03:29 PM

That's just a rough estimate though EatonBlower, it's not exactly 61cui per liter
