Functioning Cowl
I finally took some time to do a mod i have wanted to do for a while. i'm changing to a warm air intake and i want to allow as much hot air to escape as possible so opened the cowl. turned out decent for freehand.
also changed over to a magnaflow to quieten her down some, changed over to kyb strut mount plates, and will be indexing my spark plugs tomorrow. getting ready for July Autocross. |
nice. I was thinking of making a cowl hood for my cutlass supreme outta metal!
|
looks good, when I did mine I cut out the bigger triangle above it, and I saw significant drops in underhood temps.....
|
Is the inside of the hood open enough that you could make the cut out further forward towards the drivers side? I'm thinking you could make an airbox that seals to the hood, making it a functional cowel induction instead of a vent.

It may be possible, but it really is useless, you get much better airflow from a fender mounted CAI. |
its to thin anywhere else except the cowl area.
|
in car shot, my hood needs to be repainted, the guy that painted it did a total shit job.
all of these pics were taken with my HTC HD2. |

Looks good, but I think you should replace your windshield befor painting your hood, that glass has seen better days, lol |
was the underside of the cowl hollow already or did you have to carve it out from where you cut out the hood piece?
|
looks cool, i wanna see a front picture
|
Looks good overall. Have to admit, I'm surprised they let you race with a cracked windshield. I know drag racing tech inspection wouldn't let it fly.
|
yeah i've run the windshield as long as i can, im hoping my insurance will cover it. i've run it this long because the highway i drive going to work has heavy truck traffic, which is what caused the cracks in the first place.

best of luck to you on that. |
what tool did you use to accomplish the task jabartram?

nice looks good

i used a 4 in cutoff wheel on mine.... |
i used a dremel with a 1 inch cutoff wheel and a pencil tip stone for the corners.
|
Looks great. I don't think I would have the balls to do that to mine. Screwing up my hood would really ruin my day.

same situation here, thats why i was really careful |
I like it. I left the front weather strip off mine, though. In the winter, you should see waves from the heated air rise over the windshield.
The thing is, if it gets hot enough for the fans to kick on, the ECT drops to whatever the fan settings are, but the intake manifold temp rises because it's in the airpath. That's more of an issue when the car is sitting still or in slow traffic, not so much when you're racing. So sometimes it's not a good idea to have the fans kick on at a lower temp. |
