i've decided on saving for a turbo setup, and i was wondering how much power our tranny's can handle? i'll of course be upgrading the suspension, but if i don't have to upgrade the tranny, then good  thanks

If it's the manny (http://www.en.getrag.de/179/179) you can get upto 250NM outta it safely. Not sure about the auto.

adding boost to the manual tranny? than you should swap out clutches to like SPEC's stage 3.

unfortunately, it's the auto. forgot to specify, sorry. would that be able to handle more or less power? thanks

If you are planning on adding HP and torque numbers similiar to what is available for the super charger kit out of the GM Perf. Parts catalog, then you will be fine, you can actually go slightly higher than that. The advantage you have by having the 2.4L 4t40E combo is in that set up the direct clutch has 5 plates. If you had the 2.2L 4T40E combo you would only have a 4 plate direct clutch and that just isn't as robust for holding torque.

what if I'm making 270 HP at the wheels? would I need a new tranny or just a better clutch?

Final-Reality 01-09-2004 02:08 AM

A better clutch (such as a spec stage 3), and new half-shafts probably because hard launches will break the stock ones after a while

j{}n 01-09-2004 02:59 AM

um, so what about the auto? please don't tell me i'm going to drop the money for a manual...

overdrive75 01-09-2004 10:14 AM

You should be fine with the auto.

Oldsman 01-09-2004 01:45 PM

you'll be good with the auto. There are some guys with turbos on auto j-bodies with no problem.

but it ia always a good idea to beef up the tranny which will run from $1500 on up. but hp doesn't come cheap.

One thing to remember is if you can spin the tires factor with the factory set up engine. You will be fine with you set up, because with the increased power tires spin easier, and the minute the tires spin, the transmission is not experiencing the full engine output power. The tires have to stick to get that.

be afraid when it does grab..................LOL

i would be more worried about wheel hop.
