Tell me what you think (headers etc)

Alright, so I recently got a decent raise at work, and I want to complete my original concept of a decently fast NA Alero. So here's my plan, I'm just looking for alternate suggestions, and opinions on what everyone would do.

Headers: SS Headers, Ceramic coated.
Catalytic Converter: Magnaflow, from here: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Are there any other things, parts, etc, I would need to do the job, or can i hand this stuff to my mech friend and say "Do please." ?

Next, would you A) Re-tune my current DHP PCM for the headers and my exhaust etc (its still technically tuned for an intake only), or B) Buy a new PCM from MP Racing tuned for everything, then do a dyno run to make sure everythings going ok?

Thanks for the input and for reading the excessive long post :P

Haha why thank you :). Apparently a few people have seen my youtube video and made it here as a result. Im only happy to help. I dont post much until im ready to mod again.

Tomorrow she goes in for a trans fluid flush, and im doing new spark plugs and an oil change later on in the day.

When I do the headers, I wanna do em right, so thats why im asking the audience for suggestions, I dont claim to be an expert :P

O.O ... ok that can wait till the next set of mods lol. Im trying to keep it under $1500 right now.

kwhauck 10-07-2008 11:13 PM

ok ported Upper and lower IM, throttle body, and hptuners, that would be under $1500 and all of them are easy installs.....

Frostbite545 10-07-2008 11:16 PM

You think thats a better overall idea than the headers ? What kinda HP gains would one see with all that ?

Midgear 10-07-2008 11:50 PM

I dont know but we need to race before you go all ape shit with the mods lol..

im kidding, im not driving accross the united states to see who's faster with the same mods..

billytheman1188 10-07-2008 11:54 PM

frostbite, GET THE HEADERS. It sounds amazing with our exhaust......Now me and you are going to have the same set up, DS CAI-pacesetter exhaust-ceramic coated headers......you do have the dhp, which i will get when my car isnt a daily driver ;)

kwhauck 10-07-2008 11:56 PM

oh i thought you meant you already had headers and $1500 more to spend?

well lets see

headers $650
cat $160
3500 ported UIM $75
3400 ported LIM $135
heads $800-$1800
camshaft $330
65mm TB $240
3500 adapter for TB $55
HP tuners $400

Ok, well, you should be able to do the labor all yourself

my advice, skip the cat, our stock cat really isn't that restictive, if you want to you can a get a high flow cat for like $40, that cat at $160 is way overpriced, even if you aren't mechanically inclined the hp tuners will allow to keep on updating your tune with every round of new mods, so you don't have to pay for a reprogram everytime, plus you can always get a lot of help on their boards if you have problems......so for the first round of things.....

headers $650
3500 ported UIM $75
3400 ported LIM $135
TB adapter $55
HP tuners $400

Total $1315
(a couple hundred for gaskets and a six pack or two for installation)

then when you a have a couple hunder more you can get the 62 or 65mm tb and then the heads and camshaft if you choose would be more of a major upgrade later down the road when you have a little more money.....

Frostbite545 10-08-2008 12:34 AM

Well the headers I know I'm doing, but my car is a daily driver, making sending in my UIM and or LIM to be ported and polished kinda impossible. Id have to order em new... unless I steal my mom's suburban O.O

Also, I'm pretty dumb when it comes to installation, and by that I mean I'm far to scared to mess stuff up in my engine to do any real work, so I would have my friend do it for me (cheaper labor) but ya gotta add that in.

( I do thank you for the continued suggestions :) I just wanna narrow it all down )

Cliff8928 10-08-2008 01:12 AM

Oh, if you're going with headers, don't get that converter. It's pointless because the converter is only direct fit with the stock manifolds.

alerored04 10-08-2008 02:20 PM

kwhauck's suggestion is good. You can order from WOT Tech and then return your stockers for a core charge after installation. I would at least attempt the install, it's a lot easier than it seems and once you do it, you are a lot less intimidated by larger jobs. If you can't figure it out you can always have your friend come help you at that point. You will like the ported manifolds, they really wake the car up. I don't have headers but the heads and mani's made a huge difference in mine. The cam is just icing on the cake.

billytheman1188 10-08-2008 02:25 PM

The next thing i wanna do to my car is 3500 ported UIM and 3400 ported LIM.....would i have to buy the DHP before i do that?

Spilner521 10-08-2008 02:50 PM

Here's probably the best exhaust setup for you in terms of performance and flow:

Headers > 2.5" downpipe > Magnaflow metallic cat: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku > 2.5" exhaust pipe > straight through muffler.

Frostbite545 10-08-2008 03:45 PM

Lotsa good ideas. The headers are getting ordered tonight :D:D:D

[ion] C2 10-08-2008 04:03 PM

Don't get a mail order tune. Get it truly tuned at a shop, costs like $400 for a full dyno tune at Speed Industry near me.

super white alero1 10-08-2008 04:21 PM

IF you seriously want a fast NA engine you really need to look into bumping up the compression. Althought tuning might be a pita and the cost may not be worth it.

Frostbite545 10-10-2008 08:55 PM

Alright, I finally committed and bought the headers. I'll update when I actually get them, and have em installed too. Anticipation is a b****. :P
