Where to run amp power wire through firewall???
Hi,
I'm running a 4 ga to the trunk. I'm at the firewall and I'm not seeing a good place to go. There is a big gromet just to the left of the steering wheel shaft (when in the car). This doesn't look bad but it seems to be two sided. I cut a slot on the inside but it not through. Inside the engine bay I can barley see were it is. It's obstructed by the fuse box (which doesn't seem to want to come out!). Any advice? it's a 03, 3.4L What's the best way to get at the gromet I'm talking about above? (if that's the one to use). There is anther one behide the fuse box and at the top of the firewall but it goes into the area under the wineshield whipers, doesn't really help. Let me know. thanks |
Electrical tape it to a metal clothes hanger and aim upward
|
^ same, but i did duct tape.
put the coat hanger through, aim up and after a little playing you'll get it by the fuse box. just crimp the hanger around your power wire and tear it back through the grommet. |
I got mine thru the same way!
Push the hanger thru and WaBam! your power wire will come thru! |
ok, i'm assuming that you are talking about the big grommet tha is kinda under the fuse box and to the side of the steeringwheel.
|
yes. if your under your dash, its to the left and above the brake pedal. its a big gray grommet.
|
That the spot. Just slit a hole and run it through. Easier to go from cabin to motor.
|
i used a big screwdriver to open the hole i slit, then stuffed the wire through... took a couple tries, but it was painless and done in about 5 minutes.
|
I ran mine through the grommet in that area too. Just that I did it the proper way and un-taped the grommet and ran it through along with the other wires and re-taped it up. This was the lower grommet that doesn't have the PCM stuff going through it.
|
Really the easiest and the right way would be to use a hole saw and cut a knew hole, and put the proper size grommet in there for the cable you are running, only takes less then a minute and you don't have to go through the trouble of slitting the grommet there.

I like the coat hanger idea sounds innovative
|
Agreed! Yes it might be proper but taking the time to bend a hanger and think to yourself "hmm...looks like it will work" sounds so much better to me!
|
lol, I agree with u Lev. I ran mine from engine to cabin. Just removed the fuse box cover and relays so I could get my hand down there.
|
you must have very small hands.
I got it in. There are two gromets, I didn't see the one that is further left and a little higher. It seems to be the easier one. made a hole, sprayed the cable with some WD40 and it slipped through. I wasted more time on that freaking cable pull! Arg. But, everything else is just about complete so I should be waking up the neighbors soon. Thanks guys |
Hopefully its not like my neighborhood... we have like 2 jerks who'll pound their cars up and down the road any hour of the day. then i get blamed and a guy down the road who has a straight piped harley blasts his engine as he goes by, and rattles our windows....
if that bastard keeps doing it this year, i might have to think of some way to make his bike fall apart... which relates to my next question, why is it illegal to have a REALLY loud system, but no-one stops these guys who have extremely loud bike exhausts? him reving his bike as he goes by is 100x louder then my stereo will ever be. (definitely over the 102dB sound limit) |
I went under the car and up through the the area below the side back pillow on the driver side. You try running five 2/0 cables through a grommet and hiding it under carpet lol.
|
so you have 5x0gauge wires possibly exposed under your car???
|
Anything in my car ran thru the firewall is thru the steering shaft groment.
I didn't cut it, I just pushed it up and fed the wire thru then did the coat hanger trick ;) |
Did I read right...why would we have wire UNDER the car...This is where you cut out a hole for the wires! I am actually in ah right now

No. There is a professional and clean way of running the wire under the car. You just have to know what you are doing. |
