head gasket

Is a thicker head gasket better?

guiguilandry 03-04-2012 03:27 PM

well it reduces compression so for a boosted build... yes it is...

[ion] C2 03-04-2012 06:19 PM

we'll find out, as i'm using a .074" thick one compared to my previous two .030" ones.

turboalero 03-05-2012 07:34 PM

Ion let me kno I want to keep the 10:1 compression when I build my engine. so I want a thick gasket to keep it safer.

guiguilandry 03-05-2012 08:53 PM

clearly you don't know how it works... by adding a thicker gasket it reduces the compression ratio... if you want to keep the 10:1 you have to keep the stock thickness... For your turbo build I suggest a thicker one that will reduce it to somewhere like 8,9 like Ion did.... to keep it safer you want to reduce compression ratio to avoid knock when boosted...

talking at your turbo build I'd like to see some pictures of it ?? I'm interested

That was my holset turbo setup damn thing was a big oil cooler. Had my block temp all over the place, turbo blow a seal within 2k after install. Nice spool but to damn hot. The straight up down pipe I had for one month riding with no hood. Intercool changed.when turbo blow caused runaway, bottom of intercooler full of oil. No bumper at all. Cover hanged on intercooler and has a cutout about two inches from the headlights. Intake gone 2.3 swap. As you can c I'm using 2 inch charge pipes need 2 upgrade

Where did you find a place to get a thicker gasket. I looked on Cometic but they just showed a .051 for my 3.4L. I was going to just get a PermaTorque Severe Duty head gasket for my build.

[ion] C2 03-09-2012 12:35 PM

you can order whatever size you want, just tell Cometic. they're all made-to-order

Oh well that makes sense. What size would you recommend using for boost? This part is all new to me so I wouldn't know what size gasket I would need. Or would Cometic be able to help me out if I told them what I needed?

[ion] C2 03-09-2012 05:37 PM

they would not be able to tell you

stock size is fine. there's really no reason to go thin or thick unless you want to change compression slightly or that's the only size available.

So will it be safe to get the one from Felpro or should I pony up and buy a Cometic?

[ion] C2 03-09-2012 08:01 PM

in my opinion

boost = MLS gasket
no boost = doesn't matter

Redog 03-09-2012 10:14 PM

Yeah I was going to say use an MLS gasket.

I'm going to be using an MLS gasket on my 3400 build and I'm staying NA. Better safe than sorry in my book

spyhunter 04-16-2012 08:01 PM

For those wondering what MLS means... Multi Layered Steel

[ion] C2 04-16-2012 08:05 PM

For those wondering, the .074" gasket is working perfectly. Car is better than it's ever been, even stock. Of course that's mainly attributed to other parts of the system being replaced and properly done, but yeah.

turboalero 04-22-2012 01:29 AM

Congrads. What track time are you going for now that its built?
