180 T-stat

Hi everyone,

I recently came across the hypertech 180 T-stat at pfyc.com.

I wanna ask, is this upgrade really useful? Would i feel any difference?

I know engines r supposed to run at a certain temp. So what affect will i have after installing it?

And would it b better than the original for the very hot middle east days? :coolio:.

Thanx.

it makes your engine stay cooler

jayson_waltz 12-22-2007 01:20 PM

its better for engines that are always in very het temps. If it gets cold there ( as in like 0 fareignhiet(sp)) don't get it b\c when its cold you want your engine warms. But there is no perfromance gain obviously.

a colder running engine can out perform a hot one.

Redog 12-22-2007 01:40 PM

It's worth it.

I put one in a few years ago amd the car rarely goes upto 1/2 way on the temp gauge, usually stays between 1/4 and 1/2.

The downfall is, on the cold winter days, 30* and below, it takes longer for the car to get warm, but living in the Middle East, I don't think you have to worry too much abut cold temps.

I run the a/c all the way out to Lansing and it stays between 1/4 and 1/2 and it's usually about high 80's low 90's, also in the summer traffic running the a/c it gets to 1/2, but usually not over it ;)

Alon Alero 12-22-2007 03:27 PM

Yeah, but isn't there like an optimal temp. for the engine to run at? doesn't it get the most when its at the middle on the temp gauge? Or its just like the colder the better...

TheEdgeofSanity 12-22-2007 06:07 PM

a colder running engine will cause the engine to last longer...it helps reduce friction and keeps fluids from getting too hot and breaking down. it also does slightly improve performance because when its colder, the internal parts don't swell as much allowing parts to move easier. if you want to go through the work to put it in, i'd say it would be good

i dunno about you guys but when i've spun a bearing with the car almost fully warmed up, i don't suggest trying to keep the engine colder than factory.

not trying to prove you wrong or anything but it doesnt take the car longer to heat up. thermostat always stays closed until the engine hits its opening temperature which is 180 so its heats up at the same speed it just never reaches 210 like factory.

it thought it was what the temperature was on the thermostat+15 is the whole time it is open. so a 180 thermostat would mean 180-195 would be wide open. 192 would be 192-207 (pretty much what i believe u just said). it would also help if u could tune the pcm so u could get the fans to turn on a little earlier also if u want to go to a lower thermostat but it really isnt that necessary.

that's mostly right, but there isn't a cutoff point...it'll open at it's set temp and stay open till it drops below that temp. it doesn't close again if it goes 15 degrees above the set temp....and yeah, the engine will get to 180 just as fast with a 180 stat as it will with a 195...it just won't get above 180 as quick, if at all

Redog 12-23-2007 12:05 AM

Yes, temp ranges with a thremo is 15* +/-

So a 180 Thermo should only reach 195* and drop to 160* at most

The 3400 motor in the Alero is all allumium (sp) so if you can run it cooler, go for it. Allumium contracts and expands with heat. If the motor gets too hot, it is possible to crack the block, but I'm talking like in the 260* range.

A 15* diffecence isn't going to hurt anything. If you were talking about putting in a 160* thermo I'd say no. That would be too cool to run and running too cool is as bad as running too hot.

I put a 180 in the Delta's new motor too, not the stock 195, hottest it ever gotten was 220*, but that was right after the motor was turned off and I have a mech water gauge ;)

Look at the comment that an expret sent me:

"In this case, lower temp will cause MORE friction and not less.

The 180 t-stat will open eariler which means - the engine will warm up slower - but by the time the t-stat is wide open the engine's temp is depending on its radiator and ventilators and not on the t-stat."

He didn't recommend to do it...

01silveralero 12-24-2007 01:10 PM

i would recommend it since u are in isreal

CBLOHM3400 12-24-2007 05:45 PM

195 is stock temperture last i knew
only time i remember a 180 t-stat is with the hypertech thermal chip more desinged for towing trucks

You say that like it never gets cold there....:wtf2:

friction has nothing to do with it........and yes it does open sooner at 195 degresss not 210 thats the point you dont want it to reach 210...... it warms up at the same speed it just opens up all the way where it is intended too

It opens up at 180, not 195.

And from what i found out, the real improvment is in the cooling fluid or whatever u call it.

The hypertech t-stat will make it flow a bit faster, and that will cool down the engine a bit.

I think that the guy i was quoting before was wrong.

AsianAlero 01-24-2008 07:41 PM

ok i put one in my car when i bought the dhp pcm and for some reason the pcm didnt work so the thermo is still in the car. it has hurt my gas mileage not drastically but it has. this being when the car is cooler the engine is going to run richer therefore calling for more fuel. the start to open temp is 180 and it is fully open at 20 degrees after the start to open temp. so at 200 degrees it is fully open.
