Ideas on low budget HP increases?
 

Hey guys im on a tight budget due to acouple of tickets lol but i need some direction on how to bring my alero from the stock 170 hp to something like 200hp or above because ppl were talkin massive shit about the alero specs jus some ideas torque aswell thanks guys

take off that big chain you are wearing, that should give you a tenth of a second on your 0-60

maf sensor, cai, headers, exhaust are the main things, maybe even hp tuners

maf sensor wont do shit except screw with your idle. Otherwise its the basic intake and exhaust then intake manifolds, heads, tb, headers, blah blah blah. And the alero is rated 180 at the crank, its around 143 at the wheels. So 200 at the wheels is pretty tough to do without a cam and tuning. Torque if i remember correctly is around 170 crank and 135 at the wheels, i could be wrong on that though.

Original specs for the Alero were 170 hp 200 ft lbs torque but otherwise alerored04 is right small steps but you won't reach the 200 mark just with a 30 dollar intake and 50 dollar exhaust.

tb won't really do shit if you don't port out your upper and lower intake manifolds.

get rid of your cats

buy some dogs

I'm going to go out on a limb here and tell you there isn't a "low budget" path to 200hp.

[ion] C2 has given you the most equitable idea though, cheapest bang for the buck is nitrous. ZZPerformance.com has a Zex wet kit for $500. Includes a separate computer that automatically meters your ADDITIONAL fuel (does not replace your stock computer) based on bottle pressure, and includes jets for 55, 65, and 75hp so you can pick the one you want at any time.

Pro - cheapest way to 200hp unless you have friends that will port and polish for free and build you headers and exhaust system.

Con - dangerous if you dont know what you're doing (blow up your engine), could be too much power for your transmission if it's been abused already, and it's an expendable resource meaning you have to pay to use it. Costs about $40 to fill a 10 pound bottle.

Otherwise, 200hp is probably going to cost you way more than $1,000.

If you dont want to screw with nitrous, then you're looking at:

$500 or more for headers
$200 for a high flow cat
$300 or more for cat-back exhaust
$150 each for ported and polished UIM/LIM (plus cores)
$250 or more for oversized throttle body
$800 and up for performance heads
$150 for reground cam to performance specs
$200 for custom sized pushrods to go with cam
$100 plus core for reprogrammed computer

Around $2500 or more total (not low budget for most people)



SHOULD put you to around 250hp, and that's about the order I would put them in, and you can buy them one at a time as you can afford them.

at $2500 for 250hp wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a new engine and just put that in?

God Damm!! i wish i could do all that just find the right mech would be a hunt then finding parts! I swore the alero had 170hp to the wheels what good is a v6 if it can only have 170hp

Well, I would have to agree. At 170 HP and 200 Ft/Lbs stock, 200HP at the flywheel is not that hard of a goal, you just need 30 HP is all. Approx, you can get that, at approx minumum price (max performance), with an intake $100 (5HP), cat back exhaust $300 (8HP), modified computer $100 (5HP), and headers $600 (18HP). So a little over a grand... and you could feasibly get around 200HP...

To improve 1/4 mile times, consider better tires for a better launch, no real HP but they'll get u off the line faster.

^^ Well the 4 or 5 grand counts EVERYTHING probably motor wise it's like 3 or 4 which counts installation ;)

all i know is labor is a bitch and not having a garage sucked ass. for what i have spent i should be 1.5 times faster than bj. :(

^^ well what sucks about your set-up is that it takes soooooo long to get the tuning right. You get that bitch tuned in right, you'll fly :p

oh sheesh.....you didn't get the "milzy" kit did you? If ya did, then for what you spent (not for what you got), you should be breaking the land speed record.
