RPMs question
I am new to all this and don't really know that much about my cars performance yet. i just got my alero a month ago. its a 2000 2.4L auto and i was wondering about the RPMs. is it bad for the car if it revs high like when you really push it and it goes up to like 4500 or more b4 it shifts? I took out my air box and put a cone filter on and thought it would change the RPMs but it did nothing. Im just trying to learn about my car and make sure i don't screw it up in any way.

lol no.
dont let the car go over 6k RPMs and its fine for the time being.
shift points are controlled by the PCM (car's computer).
lol mine hardly ever sees any time under 3500rpm. But then again my shift points are controlled by me :)

ok thanks. and i have 1 more quick question about my intake. on the plastic hose that the filter is connected to i noticed a black box on the bottom of the hose. what is that and is it important? so if i get rid of that hose and replace it with the chrome tubes will not having that box be a problem?
nope, it's just a catch tank like, to catch any blow by oil that comes vented out of the crankcase. it's not very important.
thanks for the help. sorry if im asking stupid questions im just trying to learn about my car before i go messing with stuff.
the 4cyl regardless of how much throttle u r giving it will shift between 3-4k rpm. thats just how the shift points are set up
um.. no, mine definitely does not shift once it hits 3k rpm.. if i floor it it's waiting til 6200RPM

i dont have a 4 banger but i am 100% sure that there is a different RPM that the car will shift at depending on throttle percentage. |

if im on the throttle lightly regardless it will hit 3k then shift. if full throttle 6250 then it will shift (little into redline) |

^^^ same shifting with my '99. *** |
no it definitely depends on throttle position.. i can make mine shift around 2200 RPMs, or up all the way throughout the RPM range depending on how much throttle is given
yeah, bottom line, if you don't want your revs to go high, be easy on the gas
