Cam Install Question

I was wondering if I need a gear puller, a friend of mine said I probably would not, but Im not 100% neither of us has ever installed cams before, lol

no offence but if you never done it before dont do it, have someone help you do it with experience before you damage the head. But to answer your question yes you will need a harmonic balancer puller.

The cam gears come of easy you dont need a tool for them.

A harmonic balancer puller? I didn't know they were attached to the cams. Do you know if AutoZone rents them out, or would I need to purchase it?
Thanks for the help.

one more question, are the harmonic balances necessary? I know some early versions of the LD9 didn't have them, is there a benefit from having them compared to not having them?

yes it is necessary. autozone will have it. you have to remove the pulley to get the timing cover off. you should do some more info searching on like j-body and quad4forums before you start the cam swap otherwise you will screw up.

you are thinking of the balance shafts, im talking about the crank pulley.

also grab a breaker bar... if you don't have an air impact.

I got a chance to wander a junk yard the other day, and took a look @ how everything looks. Thanks for the all help.
