Yet another HID question...

Hey guys, just decided that I'm going to install some HID low beams. I was looking at the DDM kit, 35W maybe 5k or 6k, haven't decided yet. Anyway, anyone have experience with these DDM kits? Good quality, etc? What about hot spots being in a halogen reflector? Thanks in advance everyone!

From what I saw on their website, they are not on sale right at the moment. They do have a raptor kit though.... I'm guessing this will work too?

AndyT3 01-13-2011 10:23 PM

Yea I just looked at that. It looks the same, just slightly bigger ballasts?

cherrington17 01-13-2011 11:08 PM

5k. SUPER WHITE.

higher = less white = less visible (usable) light = lame = why bother.

AndyT3 01-13-2011 11:16 PM

Yea, I went and got the 6k. Bright white with a slight blue tint. Should be interesting.

I just got a message from them. They are out on the others, but have them ordered. Once they get them in, they will be back on sale. :)

yea, i wish i had gotten the slim ballasts. the raptor ballasts are exactly what they sound like... big as a friggin dinosaur. and they're tough to hide/mount

Hmm, well hopefully I don't have any issues with those larger ballasts. Hoping for no hot spots either, haha.

whiterider00 01-16-2011 11:25 AM

i have the bigger ones, and didnt have too much trouble mounting them. and as far as i can tell, theres no real noticeable hot spots.

sleepyalero 01-16-2011 02:06 PM

^^ you lucked out i guess.. for me its time for projector mod!

colonel6632 01-16-2011 03:29 PM

i have the bigger ballasts also. and no problems hiding the wirings

AndyT3 01-18-2011 08:21 PM

Great. Thanks guys! Now I just impatiently wait for them to come in lol.

jhubbz 01-18-2011 08:27 PM

yea, i didn't have a problem mounting the lows but i had to find a spot for the fogs that was the problem.... they're still bulk and awkward!

AndyT3 01-18-2011 08:28 PM

Yea, I was thinking about doing the fogs too, but I better tackle one project at a time.

Also, I've seen somewhere that people have had issues with the ballasts, when starting their cars in low light conditions. Like, when you key on, then start, and they shut off then turn back on, something about that causing issues with ballasts? I think the "fix" was to set the e-brake whenever you park the car, then once you start it up, release the e-brake and let the auto lights kick in, that way it doesn't charge the ballast, then spark the bulb, then re-charge/re-spark. Anyone have anything on that?

whiterider00 01-18-2011 09:00 PM

Thats what i do. Never had a ballast issue or a bulb not light. Had them for abouta year now.

jhubbz 01-18-2011 10:42 PM

i dont have any issues with my lows. i do have an intermittent issue with my passenger fog not charging right off the bat tho. what i usually do is switch my lows off then flip the switch on and off for the fogs and that usually charges the ballast. then turn lows back on. I think its just too much charging needed to do them all at once. ive read somewhere that i should set up a relay for the fogs and it will solve that problem tho

DDM has a wire harness to fix that problem. You should look into that...

I would get some for the fog lights too, but I've been having water issues with my fog light housings.... For some reason, water gets up in there and rusts out the prongs on the bulbs....

jhubbz 01-19-2011 12:39 AM

I think I found it. I will have to invest in this. I did a 9007 hi/lo install and those came with the original kit. I was wondering why I had to do that. Now I know :)

http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/HI...Wiring-Harness

"Use this relay harness to connect HIDs to cars with very small gauge wiring that cannot supply the initial surge current required to light the bulbs reliably. Symptoms indicating the harness is required would be intermittent starting or lights going out after being turned on for several minutes and requiring you to turn the lights off and back on for them to turn back on again."
