Got this fixed, it was apiece of the old tube broken off inside the opening, got it out, new one slid right in. Damned hard to tell that piece of metal was stuck in there though. FWIW to anybody else...

Just to double check..cam tower installation question

While reinstalling the intake and exhaust cam towers I noticed that i can't get the tower to sit down flat on the head to bolt it. I assume this is because the cams are still in their locked timing...

Thanks for the reply, The gear is tight on the crankshaft, no slop, and I cant see much wear if any on the sprockets or gear. The guides are good, tensioner is good, will replace the tensioner shoe....
