I used a steel brush drill bit. The larger sized ones. But i used the same gasket. I researched this mod for over a week and a lot of people have used the gasket like 4x again. Its a pretty durable gasket. As long as you dont break it when you are prying the valve cover off, then you can deff use it again (provided it was in a good shape already) Just make sure when u are putting it back on, put some motor oil on ur finger and run it all along the gasket.
Cheap mod. Only like $7 for the paint.
