the point to downshifting has already been mentioned... what if your brakes fail? what if you have a car coming up behind that doesn't slow? how will you get out of the way if there is enough room while you are in first gear? simply put, you cant... you need to be in control of the vehicle at all times... thus downshifting a manual... autos do it for you so you do not have to worry about it... if you don't want to drive the stick properly, stay with an auto...
