The I would use a relay, keep the stock power to it, and get a switch 12v line from one of the fuse boxes via a fuse tap. Messing with the ignition harness is something i would never like to do.

Almost right. Starting in around 97 gm cars will cut power to the interior lights and trunk light if left on for about 20mins. The cigarette lighter(s) will always have 12 volts going to them.
