I don't think you're understanding it correctly. It sounds like the fender buckled inward when the door hit it. Fiberglass isn't going to buckle like metal would, so if there was a large flare there it would absorb the impact and the result would be damage to the flare and not deformation in the metal fender. Therefore, it is strengthening the fender, just not in the sense you are thinking.
