I drove my Miata in the snow/ice once and it has Summer performance tires on it. The back end would kick out a little bit if you went too fast when turning as it's RWD, but it was nothing that wasn't easily manageable.
You live in an area that gets a lot more snow than me though so I could see why you would want winter tires for the added traction/peace of mind, but you could still drive on the Summer tires depending on the situation.
