in regards to the caps havik, they basically store the charge your amp would need to give it that extra punch, and it also saves the annoying headlight blinking if you buy the right cap, 1 farad = 1000 watt system, 1.5= 1500 watt system, etc.., by feeding from the cap and not directly off the battery, it'll probably save your alternator some wear and tear too.
as for equalizers, they're basically to fine tune your system, i have an Alpine Ere-G190 sub-eq for the subs and i love it, it acts like a boost in a way also, and i can fine tune the frequencies while i am listening to the music...a friend of mine had an eq for his speakers in his ride and it made quite a difference, but depending on the deck you get it will have a built in eq, so it would be pointless.
