I probably should have added that this was for a 1999 Alero with the V6 engine, even though that's in my profile (and the info is probably useful for anyone). Also, the Alero factory service manual doesn't tell you how to rebuild or otherwise test an alternator, so I used the steps and resistance reading from my 1995 Ford Escort factory service manual. Even though it should be blaringly obvious, I did put new thermal paste on the new voltage regulator.

Another antidote: When I took it back to the auto parts store to get it tested, the auto parts store clerk spun it, then said that it had bad bearings. Presumably it's bacause he was trying to be lazy and didn't want to do the test. My response was that the alternator had only 27,500 miles on it, and that bearings typically don't go bad at that mileage.
