That's actually the reason. sand/dirt/grit gets stuck on that felt piece I believe. I thought was the reason at least, I'd suppose that it could be from the felt piece wearing out I guess.

I think we have a winner here!!!
They say not to use felt pads on the bottom of your furniture because the felt will get crap in it and scratch your hardwood floors.
