P0401
Mom's Pontiac Montana's got a problem again, throwing a P0401 code again (which it put out among others when the head gasket leaked/blew. P0401 is supposedly insufficient exhaust gas flow, or a problem with the EGR. How hard is it to replace the EGR valve/unit on the 3400? I get to do it this weekend if that's the problem.

Is it the Special Edition Pontiac Hannah Montana?!
Seriously tho..
Should not be too bad
As far as installation of the EGR valve is concerned, you will locate it on the intake manifold

EGR isn't even necessary, is it? It not functioning will only piss off California. Couldn't we just say screw it and let it be? I've read around other forums who have just let it go and everything's fine.

Well think of it in terms of pissing off California and your vehicle computer. I know people say computers are not tempermental but just let an error code ride for a while and your car might give you more problems than before.
But you are right. The EGR is not as necessary as say your camshaft position sensor but...

you can let the code ride for a while but that light would piss me off after a bit. It is easy to change, two bolts from the egr to the uim and one bolt from the egr pipe to the unit itself. Be extra careful when the pipe comes in and out of the egr as it is very thin and can bend easily which will make it a huge pita to put back in the hole on the egr. Other than that it is easy.

I know the thread is old, but I wanted to add this for anybody who searches for this thread in the future.
If you replace the EGR and still have the light come on, watch the following video and instructions related to the P0401 code..

well it serves its purposes as an emissionary control dvice, but from the "performance" perspective no one wants it.

^ Yes but unless it's deleted in the car's PCM it's going to get bad MPG and lower performance
