Horsepower Variations?
I don't understand how the LA1 can have only 170 hp in an alero and grand am, but 180 hp in the impala and monte carlo and 185 hp in the chevy venture (and related vans) ... what's so different that gives it an extra 10-15 horses?

possibly the way they are tuned from factory look at the differences in sizes each vehicle has as the vehicle gets heavier they come with more horsepower. keep in mind each of the vehicles you listed were designed to be economical.

so, why wouldn't they tune the alero and grand am to have that same power? I only question this because my grandma's 2000 malibu has the 3100 and it is rated at 170 hp, which is the same as the 3400 and it seems dumb that a car with .3 more liters would have the same power. can I tune my car to match the tuning of the impala and not have to run premium fuel?

Because the different divisions of GM where like that
Chevy was the basic car, Olds and Buick are the luxury line below Caddie, and Pontaic is the "fast" car.
Plus different models like the Venture line are going to need more power. An Alero weighs in at 3300 lbs and the Venture around 3950 lbs.
(I knoiw this because I'm looking at either a Bravada or Olds minivan now. Don't worry, it's going to be a brother to Redog not a trade)

Yeah, definatly not 4000LBS curb weight, you'd be weighing in similar to what a Chrysler 300 does.

even 3200 seems a little bit high for an alero, they should be around ~3000
