Adding the muffler won't make much of a difference. You need a downpipe, and piping to get the most out of the exhaust setup. You might see a 2hp hp gain with just a better muffler.

oh ye for sure
in the top end "passing speed" pulls harder and off the line. I also have a cai to
making the car get air in and out faster is always the best improvement. I cant say how much hp (if I do someone will argue it ) for sure but it was atleast 8 + never dynoed befor or after.
and the pace setter kit is bolt on and easy to install. good project to get your hands dirty if you want and have the tools.
i have a 3.4 so if you have a 2.4 i don't know

A cat back you will probably get 5 hp.
Running true dual isn't worth it . It can be done, but it would be best to run 2 1.25 inch pipes. That's all the will fit in the exhaust channel under the car. You could do 2.5 dual with an "X" pipe, but you won't have the room for that

this is who I got my cat from it is for the 3.4
info@rsautoparts.com
here is the email I got about the part number :
I just wanted to give you a heads up that MAG23435 for the Alero has been superseded by MAG23520. It's listed for the Malibu 3.1L, but is for the 3.4L as well. I just wanted to let you know so you didn't freak when you saw the part number on the box.

i did my custom 2.5 from the cat back to a flowmaster 80 series(single in dual out) for $225.00. you need to notch the rear bumper so it looks right.

nope a jack and stands help no welding required
just take off the old and bolt on the new. if you can get the cat and down pipe to and do it all at once. the cat bolt could be a pain I jnst sawzalled mine off. I also suguest a new o2 sensor to if you get the old one out take it back. mine was bad I think (420 code) it could be that the cat so I did all new F' it.
mine hits the tunnel a little but I tucked it way up. I am lowered so I want the clearance.
this is pullin out of my drive with the stock exhaust
