I've had to pick up a new instrument cluster panel for my 2000 Alero. It is used i should mention. Does anyone know if i install it into my Alero if the kilometers of the vehicle will change?

Obviously it is a digital display so will it still show the proper amount of km's that i have driven?

Thanks guys

Scott

I thought that the Info was stored on the computer or something? the only thing that will be reset is the TRIP but the total KM/Miles should still be there.

yeah that is what i thought also. the car's computer must store that information. Either that or i will have to see if the dealership can reprogram it. They wanted 350 for a new one but i was able to get this one for a third of the price.

no its one the gauge cluster, so if you ever wanted to get rid of some miles, buy a gauge cluster from a lower mileage car lol :P

it's stored in both places. there is a way to flash the memory in the guage cluster (I don't remember how...) but once you do that, disconnect the car's battery, re-install the guage cluster, then re-connect the battery.

That is, If I remembered that correctly. I could be wrong. The new cluster will show your old miles.

I dunno if it's stored in both places or not, but I do know it is at least stored in the cars computer and that will override what is in the cluster if there is a difference. Also dunno about flashing the cluster if that does anything.

I've swapped mine out with another that had a 15,000-mile difference. It maintained my original miles after the swap.

wouldnt make much sense for it to be stored on the cluster if it's all digital, because then you could totally swap it out and cheat someone

well the dealers told me that the instrument cluster mileage is stored in the cluster itself and that they usually send them out to a company in Oshawa to get calibrated and reset.

I guess that is why on ebay the instrument clusters advertise how many miles are on it incase someone wants to roll back the odometer.

its good though that i only have to change the plexi-glass around !!

anyways i guess now we know.

don't forget that dealers are notorious for lying to us all, especially about technical info. That may be the truth, but if it's just the dealer's word, I wouldn't put too much faith in it.

Guess we won't listen to one that has done it.
