Exhaust System
Hello again everyone,
I had a few questions about an exhaust system for my alero. I was given an estimate of about $150 to have a system put in my car. I'm not sure if you guys would recommend anything as far as tips or mufflers go. Also my car likes to jump RPM's when climbing hills going between 2k and 2.5k RPM's, I was told this could possibly be clogged catalytic converter. So essentially I am looking at replacing from the cat all the way back. I'd honestly just like to take the cat out period and simply have a shop run straight from the exhaust manifold right down to a new muffler(s)/tips.
So whats your input as far as mufflers go as well as tips? Would or have you taken out the catalytic converter? Also isn't technically illegal to take out the converter?

Running no cat is illegal in most states.. when mine starts giving me trouble I'm taking mine off though since we dont have inspections in kansas.
I'd go with a flowmaster 80 series muffler and whatever tips you like..

Perhaps I can cut off my exhaust after the cat. I think I'll just put a steel pipe in and out of the cat, essentially make it a straight cat going through. That way it is still on but the exhaust can simply flow through. I"m sure someone will make fun of me for suggesting it =/. However, I won't get a fine for having it off and I can still use it the way I want. I will look at the flowmaster 80 series, my dad used flowmaster on his mustang 5.0 as well as his 78 trans am, and his 97 chevy.

Me personally would suggest keeping the cat, but others have done it. If you decide to remove it or hollow it out, you will need a o2 simulator.
I agree on the flowmaster, I've heard one in person and it sold me on it immediately.

A o2 simulator? Link? Also I priced them for about 100$ does that seem right? Also does anyone know the inches of the factory piping? I'm guessing its 2.5 or 3 inch in, of course it doesn't matter what the out is.
Edit: 2.5 inlet, any recommendations on cheap tips?

It's actually illegal in all states (Federal law). Whether or not they inspect or enforce it is another thing.

Yeah its illegal in Wisconsin but no inspections. Whats a o2 simulator? I'm defiantly thinking of just taking it off.

Thanks for the info Pontiac, I learn something new everyday. I'm looking at about $140 to take out poke a hole in the cat and have a new muffler/tips put on.

Ah, well I'm not exactly 100% car smart but I'm still learning. I understand what HP Tuner does though . Didn't think you could essentially mod out a sensor lol.
Yeah I will get the exhaust system when I find a job. I'm looking everywhere for a IT job.

yeah i had Milzy motorsports make me a custom downpipe with no cat, and he used hpt to tune out the code basically for the rear o2 so it doesnt throw an engine code and have that pesky service light on the dash. plus it saves me from buying a new cat if it would go out and saves me from buying a second o2

Hmm, that's interesting. I'll have to really think about investing in one of those. Only 60$
