I really don't think there's such thing as a nice sounding straight-through muffler on a v6. They all sound like fart cans. The only way to go in terms of having a single outlet without the straight through fart can sound is to get a "turbo" muffler, like Skyler posted.

yea, all the chambers are toned to pick and pull out certain frequencies, while amplifying others, and removing backpressure

Why didn't you have the muffler shop remove the resonator? it will sound much better? mine was removed, new pipe put in from cat to 40 series flowmaster and it sounds excellent.

i ordered 1 long ass glasspack to tone down the sound, $26 shipped. i should get it monday, and im thowing that thing on the minute i get it, so ill let you know what happens. i did some searching on club gp and they all used these dynomax glasspacks to tone down the drone, they said it helped alot, but i dont think anyone has this kind of drone, its annoying as hell

I'm getting a 2.5" cat-back with the Magnaflow muffler, not that one, a different one that won't be duel exaust. Same one Oldsman has I believe, and rumor has it he has the best sounding 2.4l around!

I don't see how you can say how a straight-thru style muffler will sound like a "fartcan". I've had those on a couple vehicles and they're far from it. As for the flowmaster, I personally don't like them and i think they sound "tinny" and high pitched. (had 'em on a 69 chevelle with a 396 and i hated 'em)
It sounds like the problem with the vehicle in question is that there is a resonance inside the vehicle that can be annoying. That can be the combination of all the items in the whole system. The muffler with the outlets both on one side would be the best for the space availability under the back of the alero, it would fit in the stock location.

the piping is stock. the guy there that owned the shop said i had stock mandrel bent stainless steel, 2". he can put in 2.25, but it would get smaller than 2" around the bends anyways. he said by keeping the 2" ill keep my velocity for torque, but by putting a strait through muffler remove the backpressure. so its a stock system with a muffler welded on the back. trust me, its a LOUD fartcan, it doesn't look like one, but it sounds like one. the resonance between 1500-2500 is horrible. when i was driving on the highway i put it in 3 so it would be at a higher rpm and it wouldn't be so anoying. its not HIGH PITCHED but its pretty high.

Keep us in mind once you figure out which direction you're gonna go in, I'm interested in some exhaust components, maybe we can work a deal on somethin' Pimp. B)

Before I got the SLP setup I had a straight through fart can and it sounded fantastic. It didn't over power you with sound and had a nice low tone to it. Now that the SLP is on there I hate it. It's so f***ing loud inside the car. I can't stand to drive the car on the interstate because when the RPM gets between 2000 - 2300 at 70 mph the sound is so loud that you get a headache. I love the sound it makes on the outside of the car but I'll be really happy when its gone.
