1999 and later model 3.4L motors
i need a motor for my 1999 alero, i know the motor out of an alero, grand am, and chevy venture are the same and they fit(according to the scrap yard) but they dont have any...they do have a 2000(?) grand am but they said it wont fit, but they also said the block is the same as my 1999...so what is the difference between the 1999 and the later years?...what would i have to change to make it fit? and are 2000, 2001, and 2002 grand ams all different(motor)? what would i need to do to each one to make it fit and run in my 1999 alero?

I put a 00' engine into a 99' Alero- ran fine except for some most likely unrelated hesitation.
You need to use the fuel injectors & fuel injector wiring harness off of your 99' Alero. Also, the UIM & EGR from your old engine may need to be used. Otherwise, check for differences.
Everything else on mine was the same though. Some of the later models have a different sensor.

so i wont need new(or different) motor mounts?...everything i need should be on my olds motor then too, no fabricating needed?
there must be some differences between a '99 and an '00 because 3 out of 3 of the scrap yards i called said that they are different and not interchangable...so what is the difference?...just the UIM(what is that anyways?) , EGR, and the fuel injectors/harness
also, should i grab the computer from the '00?...or is it the same as my '99?

as far as I know both the upper and lower manifolds, and the egr are the only differences from '99 to '00. The 2000 has Large Port Manifolds and a different EGR where as the '99 has the small port manifolds and like I said before a different EGR. As far as the computer goes I would grab the '00 PCM if you are going to go with that motor. As far as the injectors go I believe they stayed the same between the years.

as far as the PCM goes...if you are taking an engine out of another car and putting it in yours i would get the VIN number from the other car and go to the dealership after its all installed and have them flash your PCM with the most current .bin file for the other cars VIN. hope that makes sense lol

the difference in port sizes is the UIM & LIM runners and ports at the UIM gasket are smaller on the 99. the 00 has what they call "large port manifolds." IIRC the heads are still the same between the years but the manifolds swap perfectly between the years.
hope that helps

I know that was the case with the 3100 engines when they switched from the VIN M engine to the VIN J engine. The intake ports on the older (12-bolt) manifold were significantly smaller than the newer (6-bolt) manifold. I wasn't aware of a port size change on the 3400 since it's inception in '96 though.

I'll have to go check that one out. Might as well upgrade my '99 3400 when i do the intake gasket, it's still on the original.

Nice job - it took me longer than that to get everything hooked up and working. Let us know how it runs.

got the rest of everything hooked up and started her up a day ago, it had been sitting for almost a year without running but started with a few cranks...it had a horrible knock but the motor had a warrenty so i let it run...the knock went away on its own...?....anyways finally got tags on it last night and drove it to auto zone to have them check the service engine light, its saying my number one cylinder has a misfire(either coil, wire, or plug) but i put a brand new plug in it, i had spark through the wire and just for fun i checked the resistence of the coil...all good...so now im stumped...any ideas guys?...could it be a problem with the ECU?
