Hey all,

i threw my rims off and put my winter tires on this past winter in a panic, so I didn't have a chance to wash my rims before i put them away for the winter. i took them out and found this wierdo growth/oxidization on the chrome part of the rims.. the powdercoated parts of the rim were ok..

check out the attached pics...

any ideas how i can try to fix this thing on my own? this happened to my bud's konig rims and the rim shop charged him like $100/each time to fix..

anyways this sux.. cuz i love my rims.. ugh so upsetting..

thx all.

I bet that's clearcoated aluminum, and the clearcoat had scratches, letting the salt corrode the aluminum. Sry to see that man, but they'll look awesome once they're fixed.

My stockers have done the same. I am going to paint them this summer. I hate salt also. Thats why I don't plan on buying an aftermarket rims for my Alero because its a daily driver.

ok here is the update.. after talking to some car friends and web research.. i did the following:

- used acetone to remove the clearcoat on top of the polished aluminum (or whatever metal it is)
- used metal polish (more specifically Eagle 1 NanoPolish) and polished the living sh*t out of it..

A lot of it was removed, but there is still *scaring* left on the metal where the oxidization took place.. i still dont know if it's enough to make it look decent again or if i shud just take teh loss and shell out the $$...

ok check out hte attached pictures.. if you look at the first pic, the area in black is the cleaned area.. and i just threw a second pic there for comparison to the oxidzation, untouched...

Questions for ya 14alero:

- what kinda sandpaper you use? grit/special type?
- when you mean wet did you just dip the sandpaper in water? or dropping water on the area yer sanding? ive never done any wet-sanding before
- buffing wheels and buffing clay? can you tell me more about this stuff?
- did you every try to put clearcoat back on? ive seen some spray's that i was thinking to apply afterwards..

thx!!

no offence man but it's kinda your fault. If you can get them cleaned up then more power to you but its not looking in your favor. You might have to start looking for some new ones.
