noob wants to swap engine/tranny

Hello, so my auto transmission is getting ever so close to its death bed and my car is pushing 100k miles. Seeing as how I love this car I am willing to spend several thousand dollars to swap new stuff in rather than selling it for next to nothing and putting out for a new ride. So keeping in mind that I am not very auto savvy how would I go about getting a 5spd manual tranny and and a new engine? Am i limited to alero/grand am stuff or should i be open to parts from other types? Is their any good places where i can learn a little more about this stuff? ty

ok, so that pretty much shows it is damn tough to just swap a transmission and impossible for a 3400 5spd... but my case is a lil different sense i want to swap the engine out also... assuming that will make it easier...

Not really all that tough, just a lot of figuring stuff out. (presumably for the first time). Definitely want to have another car to drive.
