HOW TO: 3400 timing chain repair

The special tools required to perform this repair procedure are a crankshaft sprocket removal tool, and a sprocket installation tool.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Drain and recycle the engine coolant.

Remove the right front tire and wheel.

Remove the engine front cover, as outlined in this section.

Reinstall the crankshaft bolt, and using a breaker bar and socket, rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket locator hole are aligned to marks on the engine block or timing chain damper. This is the number 1 piston at top dead center.

Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt, then remove the camshaft sprocket and timing chain.

Remove the crankshaft sprocket by using the special tool.

Remove the timing chain damper bolts and damper

To install:

Install the crankshaft sprocket using the special tool until fully seated on the flange of the crankshaft nose. Apply a suitable lubricant to the sprocket thrust face.

Align the crankshaft timing mark to the timing mark on the bottom of the chain damper

Hold the camshaft sprocket with the chain hanging down and install the chain to the crankshaft gear.

Install the camshaft sprocket and timing chain. Align the timing mark on the camshaft gear (centerline of locator hole) with the timing mark on top of the chain damper. Torque the bolt to 140N.m (103lb. ft.)

Install the chain damper to the block.

Lubricate the timing chain with engine oil.

Replace the engine front cover, as outlined in this section. Use that procedure to complete installation.

Change the oil, fill the fluids.

Install the right front wheel and tighten the lug nuts.

Connect the negative battery cable.

do all 3400 aleros have timing chain instead of a timing belt?

hahaha yeh no belts in our cars.

But note - the chain needs only be changed as if its clunking or making some type of noise. Otherwise, its pointless. They last for many, many miles. Its not part of a scheduled car maintenance. Belts, though, are a different story and need to be replaced as indicated by the manufacturer.

I would say this is NOT the most necessary how-to because of that. Most of us will never do this repair on our cars while we own it.

yeah thats what i heard that chain lasts way longer than belt.. good to hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but what about the 2.4L??? chain?

2.4 has timing chain
