Hand brake replacement?

Well my car wont pass inspection because the hand brake doesnt lock it works, it holds the vehicle but it wont lock the part is 54 bucks but 200 to have a shop do it i dont have a job so i have to do it myself. How do i replace it, i looked in the haynes manual and it doesnt tell me.

Probably have to remove the console, won't be hard once you find the all the bolts.

I put the new hand brake on, but theres a whole bunch of slack in the cable, does any-one know how to get rid of the slack?

If i understand there's an auto tensioner that will takeup some of the slack.


Put your car in reverse and back up slowly, while pulling the hand brake on and off and you're moving.

when you install a new handbrake, there is a procedure in the gm service manual that tells you how you need to re-wind the tensioner spring. i don't have access to the book anymore, but i'm sure someone on here can chime in and post it. after that it is auto tensioning.

i have no idea about the locking thing, i just responded about his cable having so much slack in it.

a good guy that i am pretty sure knows about tightning it up would be bkathsalero, i know he has tightened his up.
