Question

Well, I searched and I didn't find anything, so if this has already been addressed, I apologize.

Something is wrong with the fan in the air-conditioner/heater. The other day, Jimmy turned on the heater and the little knob fell off. No big deal, but when we put the knob back on, the heater stopped working. At first, Jimmy thought it had gotten turned wrong because the knob would turn the wrong way. But then I figured out he had not put that little blue piece back in that stops it from turning all the way around. So we fixed that, but it still wasn't working right. When you turn it on, you get nothing at 1, nothing at 2, but 3+ all work fine.

Has anyone dealt with this? It wouldn't be so bad if it were the other way around, but to have to set it at three all the time is really annoying! Please help if you can!

It has been covered here before. I believe it is the switch itself behind the knob. Needs to be replaced. Lots of people on here have had it though.

no, its the blower motor resistor that needs to be replaced. VERY common, if you still have warranty, go get it changed.
Cheap part if not.

You need a fan resistor. It is located on the passenger side...inside the car...& is mounted on the inner firewall..You have to be very agile to get to this as it is better to take the glove box out & get on the floor on Your back & look way up for it.

WELLS DR774 = around $15.00... or Olds Dealer

1) Resistor is located next to firewall on passenger side, in part of the blower motor plastic housing assembly, on the downside part of the assembly that is toward the passenger's feet.
2) To get to it, you will need a 7/32 " socket. You will need a universal socket adapter. Trust me... you will need a universal socket adapter.
3) You will need to either be skinny, or hire a ten year old boy who can work tools and can bend his spine funny. (Actually, you can do it). You will need to open the passenger door, and lay on your left hip with your upper torso on the passenger floor.
4) Look up toward the fire wall. LOOK UP! You will see wires feeding the resistor via a connector. You will see two bolts holding the resistor in the housing.
5) Bingo! There you are!

Thank you so much, guys!! We'll have to live without it until tomorrow after my test, but I'll get it fixed then.

Is that something I'll find at any autoparts store, or will I have to order it?

Well, ok, are Well's parts found at any auto store, or do they have their own store? All I have around here is Discount Auto Parts and Autozone.

Wells is a line of automotive electronics found in most auto stores as the company is huge but call first to see if the part is stocked.

Thanks! I'll probably just stop by there since I have to be right next door to Autozone this afternoon anyways. I appreciate all the advice!

Ugh. That sucks. Oh, well, at least I'm pretty good at this kind of thing. It could be worse. It could be stuck for Jimmy to do. His idea of working on the car is putting a different CD in the player! :P
