would it be more practical to buy a 5 spd Ecotec Alero and drop a 3400 in it? as long as u were using stand alone fuel management and MSD ignition?

Don't forget the PCM, You'll need a new one. Most likely a custom program :hide:

Again, the 2.2's transmission will bolt to the 3400, the 2.4's will not.

Thats where I got the idea of droping a 3400 into a 5 spd Eco. Maybe I just read it wrong.

the Ecotec's bellhousing will not fit the 3400... The only Getrag 287 bellhousing that will fit the 3400 is in the 2000-2002 Cavalier and Sunfire with the 2.2 liter "2200" OHV (base) engine.

The 3400 drives nice with a manual..

My beretta has a 282 in it, because that's what bolts up to the existing mounts. Unfortunately for the Alero the original mounts in the automatic most likely won't work. The complicated part of mounting the 287 in the Alero is getting the old automatic brackets cut out and the new 5-speed brackets welded in. I'm not sure if GM services them separately or if you'd have to get them cut out of a 5-speed alero in the junkyard. Other than that, you'd just have to figure out what clutch disc and pressure plate to use, then get all the other manual related parts for the Alero.

so an alero manual clutch and pressure plate would work in the 287?

It all matters whether or not the pressure plate would bolt up to the flywheel (which would have to be from an older V6 i believe). I haven't checked into whether or not any of the 4-cylinder flywheels bolt up to the V6.

Good news. It appears that the 2200 and the 3400 share the bolt patterns, so the flywheels will interchange between the two. So the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate will bolt up correctly from the aforementioned 2000-2002 cavalier.

That also means you can get a performance flywheel as well (like a lightweight Fidanza)

the 2200 was an older engine right? so the 2200 has the exact same bolt patter as the 3400? and the 2200 has the bigger aftermarket?

but what about the getrag 287? did that one have the same bolt pattern as the 3400?

No the 2200 engine is pretty new. They starting using it in the 1998 Cavy/Sunfire as the 'small' motor.

I don't know if they still use it. I know for a fact that it was in the 2002 and I'm pretty sure it was in the 2003 models.

OK so we know the tranny to buy, what about PCM upgrades to make it run right?

The 2200 was produced from 98-2002. It used the Getrag 287 only in 2000-2002
