Wheel Hub

Okay, what is a tell tell sign that I need to replace my wheel hub? My tire sounds like its rubbing but its not. I called a couple of mechanics, they said that from what I described sounds like the bearing went out and that I need to replace the hub. But I had a bearing go out on another car I had and when the car was parked you could push on the wheel and the wheel would be very wobbley but its not the same on this car. Could someone help me out?????

if your hub is going out it will sound/feel like there is something rubbing, and a faint hum will be noticable inside the car. eventually when it finally goes out your ABS and TRAC OFF lights will illuminate, thats when you need to get it replaced ASAP...

There's a loud rubbing noise on the inside of the car and my low tire pressure light is on. Yes I still have the six spoke alluminum wheels with the original rubber. Oh and the steering wheel tends to shake when i hit above 70 mph.

There's a low drone that almost sounds like a small propeller airplane. It gets louder the faster you go and you can feel a small vibration in the steering wheel and on your feet through the floor if you really pay attention.

If the sound goes away or there's less noise and vibration when you turn to the right, it's the left bearing. And if it goes away when you turn to the left, it's the right bearing. This is due to the weight transfer off the bad bearing when you turn or round a curve which then makes the noise and vibration not as noticeable. I've changed both of mine and that's how I could tell which one to change both times.

Another quick question. Can I change out the bearing or do I have to get a whole new wheel hub, if so where would the best place to get the bearing? I called around and everyone just has the hub.

It's an all inclusive package. You need to get the whole hub. I suggest aftermarket (read: not a GM replacement part) since the GM part is the one that fails all the time on just about every Alero. I got both of mine from Autozone. The brand was Timken I believe and I've never had the problem since.

Uhh, don't you have that one backwards? If you turn right, the weight goes off the right bearing and then it quiets down.

It's about $100 each, you can get just one. I replaced mine with aftermarket when the bearings failed. Now the aftermarket bearings are fine but the sensors are shot and I need to replace #4. At least I'm just without ABS and I don't have to fix it NOW.

Yep you're right. I just read it over again. I knew what I meant I just typed it wrong. If you turn right and the sound goes away, it's the right bearing and the same for the left.
