ok guys i did not use the light power to power this mod, i taped into the fuse box to a SWITCHED power source ( i chose the wiper fuse), and ran that wire to the ORANGE wire at the plug of the guage cluster, if you use the light (grey) wire the guages will only work when you have the lights on, also the reason my dash lights come on with the key is because i wired it to do that, they DONOT come on with the lights, every time the key is on the dash lights are on

this explains how to make the gauges sweep on start up,
first take the gauge bezel out, then remove the gauge cluster,
unplug the connector at the back of the gauge cluster,
find the orange wire and cut it, leave plenty of wire at the connector so you have room to work with it,
next run a wire from the fuse box that is switched with the key ( i used the wiper fuse), you can tap into the power wire for the radio if you have a aftermarket radio
nxt you connect the wire you ran from the fuse box to the ORANGE wire going into the cluster connector,
then connect the cluster and re install it to the dash and reinstall the bezel,
turn the key on and enjoy full sweep on startup,

the ac controls are the same color as the dash
the bulbs are stock.....
but i took the cluster apart and applied a light filter film to the back of the gauge face, its actually called light filter gels and are available at most photography shops

Ya, I found out the intiror light was a bad idea. The sunroof fuse is a good one to tap into though.

lol told ya so.

I figured a better and easier way to do this altogether. If you look at the pinout of the cluster, the orange wire is in A12. There are two purple wires, but the one you want to use is in A2. This wire is hot in accessory/run or start. Splice the orange wire into that purple wire and you are good to go.

Hooray!!!! btw triple beep is my radar.

I figured one of those wires up there would do it... And I spent an extra 5 minuets running over to the passenger fuse pannel for the sunroof. Gash dang it.

THANKS JAWA!!!! Big ups to you

I've always wondered why it would sweep only when you plug in the cluster, but not any other time.

hmm.. I wonder if this will work in the Malibu?
So in summary, cut orange wire, splice connector end into purple wire..
Right?

correct, to be certain use a volt meter and test the wires, but the orange wire on the alero is the power wire for the cluster

Hmmm ok i understand now. You need to use a switch source that goes dead when the car is starting.

2001 Alero vs 2001 Grand Am

Idk about dead, but you want to use wire that only has power in ACC or ON. I used the one I did bc it was right next to it, and only had power in ACC or ON. Idk how you would keep the trip meter going.

I just did the mod, i'm gonna see how long the trip keeps the memory. If it's 5 seconds or so, it will be easy to put in a relay with a normal set of close contacts. And they will open when the car is starting, and close back.
