Alright.. I'm going to tell on myself here....

I recently had two new power steering units put into my car... well, last month...

It all started when I was planning on getting a new set of tires... I decided to burn the old ones for all they were worth.... get every last penny out of them... you know?

Well, I was smoking these tires... doing some NICE circles in a parking lot, when right in the middle of the 6th turn.. my power steering unit went out.... AH!!! anyhow... I took it in for an inspect and they said the unit was "sheared".... well, so I got a new one... and a few days later.. the day I was going to get the new tires, I burnt the old ones down some more.

And guess what? the power steering unit went out again! and when I got the new tires, I had the place check the unit.. "sheared" they say..

WHY!!!??? it was "sheared" on the right side... wouldn't that mean it was contacting something on it's right side that was sharp? couldn't find anything... why does the unit go out.. what part of the engine would shear the unit? I don't know.. maybe you might.. or have experienced this same problem...

where is it shearing? is it the hex shaft that goes into the cam? a little more detail on where it is shearing would help.

I have never had this problem and haven't heard of this. some people have had there pumps go bad but not like this.

Mine did the EXACT same thing...I mean there is snow all around so sometimes when im backing out of my driveway ill do a lil reverse donut :P , but i was in my uncles driveway just backing out and I spun the wheel pretty fast and the power steering just went out. So the next day I brought it to my mechanic and he showed me where the pump hooked up to the cam there is a hex shaft that is supposed to be a pressed fit in the cam, but i guess it sheered a little and would no longer turn with the cam..it was just rotating freely. Cost me 200 <_<

Doing backwards doughnuts... (im assuming they are backwards..unless several ppl on here are driving RWD aleros..) is not only hard on the powersteering, but also the tie-rod ends and can damage your alignment... scince our aleros have rack and pinion stering you prolly sheared the "rack" part of it...
